I'm not sure it's 90% effective at preventing Covid infections, but it's well over that for preventing serious Covid infections - which is the whole point. If almost no one died from Covid, it would be merely an annoyance and not a deadly pandemic, and few people would even remember the name.
If you take out the extreme elderly and those with a very compromised immune system, the vaccines all but prevents intubations and death from Covid infections. My buddy's wife is a nurse at a large hospital, and they're still reporting several deaths a week from covid for non-elderly and otherwise healthy adults, virtually all unvaccinated.
That's what I've seen in real life - in my area basically all the ICU COVID patients are unvaccinated, as are 99% of the people who die from COVID. The vaccinated may get COVID but they don't get sick enough to need ICU care, unless they have a serious underlying condition like cancer. The only vaccinated person I know of who died of COVID, had advanced cancer.
I'm not saying this to convince the anti-vaxx idiots, I can't say more about my work so I can't go into any more detail than this. I'm saying this in case anyone who has sense reads it. REMEMBER, THERE IS NO CURE FOR COVID-19, THERE IS ONLY PREVENTION. WASH YOUR HANDS, COVER YOUR FACE, AVOID CROWDS, AND FOR FUCK'S SAKE GET VACCINATED.
Remember when the goal was to get "herd immunity" of around 75% vaccinated? Many cities have far surpassed that threshold, yet it's still masks, job firings, etc. Besides that, there is actually recent peer-reviewed evidence that "there appears to be no discernable relationship between percentage of population fully vaccinated and new COVID-19 cases." Herd immunity was not a lie, if that's what you meant. Whether it was 75% or 80%, it may have been an underestimation, or it may have been based on what is believed about the Spanish flu. There is a lot the scientific community is still learning about Covid, including what impact the variants, Delta and beyond, might have.
I notice, too, that the paper you cite and quote from does not mention the unvaccinated and the impact they have on new Covid cases.

As an example: recovered but unvaccinated have at least the same protection but they insist on fully vaccinated them as well.
Which is stupid and anti-science and proves that it's not just about protection. Btw, European states accept natural immunity, it's on they "green passports".
Plus: when government makes this kind of shady and non-transparent policies then automatically the population trust goes into the bin.
