Why all The Handmaid’s Tale Worry.

I have watched numerous meltdowns on YouTube. Honestly I can understand being disappointed when your candidate loses. I have been there. But I have never sobbed and screamed over a loss

At least three women were worried that “The Handmaid’s Tale” would become a reality now. Since when is not wanting unlimited access to abortion the same thing as putting women into the role of forced sex slaves who must bear children?

And to put it mildly, all the complaining women were not very attractive. Who the heck would want to perpetuate the species with their homely genes?🙈

reply

Were these people this worried when the government was mandating medical treatments?

I can't remember that far back.

reply

These are people who live in a leftist bubble, and probably seldom if ever actually speak with people who are not ardent leftists just like them. Some of them, I strongly suspect, have probably cut ties with friends or family members over political disagreements, further insulating themselves inside their bubble. They have uncritically swallowed every line of the alarmist Democrat propaganda, and they are also victims of the modern tendency over on the left to catastrophize every remotely unpleasant or unwelcome developent. They picture worst-case scenarios, even to the extent of ludicrous, fantasy-level scenarios and then they wallow in their fear and anxiety. They're taught to do this in colleges these days. Jonathan Haidt has written at length about it. It's incredibly self-destructive, from a mental health standpoint.

reply

Darren, now that you mention it, a lot of those women said that they were now blocking their parents, friends, etc, because of the way they voted.

My best friend and I were on opposite sides over Obama and McCain. But we are still friends!

reply

Glad I don't have a kid who did that. Hard to say what I'd do. Any friend who cut ties, even a sibling really... Yeah, don't bother ever coming back. If you know me, have known me for years, and know very well from years of direct, personal experience, so you know I'm fundamentally a decent person, and you then convince yourself I'm some kind of Nazi because I don't agree with your political opinions... Yeah, good riddance to you. You've shown yourself to be so fundamentally intolerant and judgmental a person, that I don't want to know you. I don't want to be around people like that.

reply

I see your point, but to be fair a dystopia like The Handmaid’s Tale would have to begin with government control over reproductive rights, wouldn’t it?

And while you yourself may be moderate and calm in the face of defeat, there was a whole lot of sobbing and screaming around January 16 a few years ago if I remember correctly. Hysterics are not exclusive to one side from what I see.

reply

Begin? You mean the people did not want to change the policy from hundreds of years ago, even Kings and Queens did not do that, but suddenly they are a threat to you?

At least have some basic logic, not just fearmongering.

reply

Semantics. I think you know what I meant and, if not, I can assure you I wasn’t fearmongering. I don’t think it’s right that women can face criminal prosecution for deciding whether to continue a pregnancy or not, but that’s not to say I think Trump’s victory is the first chapter of The Handmaid’s Tale either.

I can’t see how he will be a strong advocate for women’s rights though, there’s not much in his track record to suggest he will.

reply

Why would he need to be "a strong advocate for women’s rights"? Is gender equality not enough for you?

reply

Not really, if his intention is to reduce those rights.

reply

Typical feminist of today.

reply

Hmm, okay, if you say so. I would never describe myself that way but if being pro-choice is typical, I guess I’m typical. It doesn’t bother me if it’s easier for you to shoehorn me as such.

reply

Kiwi Jim, yes government control is to be feared. As it stands now, some people get in trouble or fired for using the wrong pronouns!

But I do not honestly see the government forcing women to have babies. If anything, the message is “be more careful”. There have always been unintended pregnancies. But considering that preemies who weigh two lbs. can be saved, it just seem cruel to abort babies so late in a pregnancy.

Many pregnancies were ended even before Roe. I remember as a teen-ager, my mom told me our family doctor would admit a woman and label the surgery a “D&C”. And no one would know. Medical records are private.

She also told me that if you were late, he would “give you something to start your period”. The whole morning after pill is nothing new. And I am sure our family MD was not the only one who knew .

They're just overly dramatic attention seekers. Ignore them and their hysterics.

reply

I saw this one black lady who sobbed that she was afraid to go to sleep on election night, because she thought she would wake up as a "f---ing slave".

I hope RFK can get her and others like her some help when he takes over the Department of Health.

reply

I saw that woman too! Yikes, if I was related to her I would be so embarrassed.

reply

There's no room for nuance with these people.

> If you're a man who chooses to live as a woman, that's you're right and I hope you're happy. But I don't want you competing with my daughter in sports or sharing a bathroom with her or reading story time to my toddler in his school library.

"WHY DO YOU HATE TRANS PEOPLE?! WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL US!!?!!!"

> We should not be killing babies with a heartbeat in the womb, unless the mother's physical life is at risk or she will suffer permanent physical harm.

"WHY DO YOU HATE WOMEM?! WHY DO YOU WANT US TO BE CONCUBINES WITH NO RIGHTS, FORCED TO BEAR YOUR CHILDREN???!!!?!?"

reply

Yes, I wish some of these hysterical folks would look up the word “phobic”. I’ve encountered trans people and they don’t scare me.

As far as The Handmaid’s Tale, it really makes no sense anyway. Has anyone ever read “The Children of Men” by British author P.D. James? It also portrays a future dystopia where all women are infertile. The population is aging and dwindling. There are fewer young people to work and replace older folks.

In this scenario, young women are depressed. No one can have a baby . But human nature being what it is, these young women have taken to pushing dolls in baby carriages. They have a maternal instinct which they cannot fulfill. It is simply nature. Humans are hardwired to want to reproduce.

Granted, many people do not want kids. Some choose very time consuming careers and other people never meet someone they wanted to marry and have kids with….

In a story like The Handmaid’s Tale, it is doubtful that women would be forced to have children. If so few women were fertile, they would most likely not want the human race to die out.
