WHAT A FRAUD!

I am not blaming Alicia just the studios that are allowed to do this! She won her supporting Oscar in THE DANISH GIRL for what was clearly a leading role she was on screen as much as Eddie Redmayne and it gave her a clear advantage over the other nominees! I wonder if she would have been as successful in the lead role category? Personally I think not. Just now ilooking back at Oscar history........and in 1973 AL PACINO was nominated for supporting actr in the GODFATHER. The actor, having integrity BOYCOTTED the awards that year. Pacino's beef was that he had more screen time in the film than MARLON BRANDO who was nominated and won the best actor! How bizarre is that! And to add to Pacino's misfortune he was up against Joel Grey who delivered the performance of a lifetime in CABARET and walked off with the supporting actor award....sometimes real life is stranger than fiction HA! HA!

I have to agree, although I was not aware of the precedent with Al Pacino in Godfather. I do think you can justify a performance being upgraded to best actor when it dominates the rest of the movie, in the case of Brando. I was shocked when I watched The Danish Girl and realized Alicia was clearly co-lead in that movie. Imagine what the trolls would say if Jennifer Lawrence's name had been placed in supporting for Joy.

Pacino is one of my favourite actors he was even better in THE GODFATHER PART 2 and lost out to Art Carney for HARRY AND TONtTO we all remember that like the GODFATHER FILMS HA, HA! Seriously for the craziest win ever and the most moving watch INGRID BERGMANS acceptance speech winning her third Oscar for ORIENT EXPRESS she spends her whole speech apologising saying another nominee should have won for DAY FOR NIGHT WHICH HAD WON BEST FOREIGN FILM THE YEAR BEFORE,! Such style and class....sadly we just don't have it anymore!

reply

Indeed, Ingrid Bergman had such class, style, and grace. I just watched the clip and yes, we are in a very different era these days. Alicia did not stand a chance to win best actress and clearly that was category malpractice.

The only thing clear here is that you know nothing about the nomination process for Academy Awards. And on a related issue, why do a few of you worry about that at all? It is one of the more insignificant things in life and makes absolutely no difference to her career or to your viewing enjoyment.

Do you even realize that the title refers to the Redmayne character?

Yes I admit I know very little about the academy award process and no I am not worried about any of it at all the subject interests me. Do not all academy members get to vote on the process? Not just actors but technical crew as well sound and lighting etc.....but who decides whether it is a supporting or leading role is that the studio? And yes, I have of course seen the film the DANISH GIRL and did realise it referred to Redmayne's character.

Your use of the term "FRAUD" doomed your post because it definitely is NOT fraud. It is all run by a finely-tuned process. If you are curious you can easily do an internet search and find all you need to know. Also if you look at the Supporting Actor winners each year you will see they often are given to an actor who has a major role but is not considered the main character.

An excerpt of the process to nominate actors for each of the 4 categories, 2 each male and female:

For each of the four acting categories — lead actor and actress, supporting actor and actress — voters are asked to list up to five names, ranking them in order of preference.

These nomination ballots are sorted based on the voters' first-place ranking. Actors receiving enough first-place votes — more than the threshold number arrived at by taking the total number of ballots received per category and dividing it by six (the number of possible nominees plus one) — become nominees.

The entire Academy membership, 6000+, vote for Best Picture. Only actor members nominate then vote for the acting categories.

What did you expect?. After Halle Berry won an oscar for showing her boobs in
Monsters Ball despite her appaling acting, nothing surprises me anymore.
I'm not saying i could do a better job acting, but she didn't deserve an oscar.

reply

The Academy should have a category for 'Best Breasts'.

Cracking pairs deserve to be awarded.

Pff... why using IMDb at all if one can't discuss stuff like that?
