Jennifer Lawrence Addresses Remark About Female-Led Action Movies After Backlash

Jennifer Lawrence is setting the record straight on a comment she made about female-led action movies following backlash.

At one point during the actress' conversation with Viola Davis for Variety's "Actors on Actors" series, Lawrence, 32, said, "I remember when I was doing 'Hunger Games,' nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn't work -- [because] we were told girls and boys can both identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead."

However, Lawrence received some backlash on Twitter over the particular remark in which she said that before she starred in "The Hunger Games" "nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn't work." Her comment became a trending topic as many pointed out how actresses such as Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton were the lead stars in the action franchises "Alien" and "Terminator," respectively.

On Thursday, Lawrence addressed her comment while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter.

"That's certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film," she said. "What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels. And I meant that with Viola -- to blow past these old myths that you hear about … about the chatter that you would hear around that kind of thing."

"But it was my blunder and it came out wrong," she admitted, before adding, "I had nerves talking to a living legend."

As for why she decided to speak out about her comment, the Oscar winner said, "One time I was quoted saying that Donald Trump was responsible for hurricanes. I felt that one was ridiculous, that it was so stupid I didn’t need to comment. But this one, I was like, 'I think I want to clarify.'"

Weak excuse that makes no sense. She meant what she said.

"I had nerves talking to a living legend.". Well, talking to whoever that is she's sucking up to and calling that because it's pc to do so.

While of course, inadvertently or not, taking a dump on all those actual 'living legends' who preceded her role (in a soft teen-targeted action franchise) with actual badass female lead roles.

hahahahahahah

no she wasnt

arnie was lead in terminator. everyone go see film for him. he is lead man in this legendary action genre. arnie = terminator franchise.

in first terminator sarah is third bill. michael biehns and arnie do all action. sarah do nothing except kill terminator missing arms and legs and crawling after her at 1 mile a centurys.

in T2 arnie and robert patricks do all action. sarah does some action. sarah is good chracter but not leading action star. but people go see this film for T-800 and T-1000.

colonial marine were star of Aliens, not signourney. bill paxtons and michael biehns steal show.

but jizz face jennifer is still wrong. many tough leading ladys before her jizz face show up with bad acting talents and bad feminaze attitudes.

I agree with you on Terminator. I'm not sure why everyone keeps bringing that up as an example.

But as for aliens Sigourney Weaver was definitely the star of the show

Dumb. The Resident Evil movie franchise - fronted by Milla Jovovich - started in 2002 (ten years before Lawrence started in The Hunger Games) and went on for six movies. The Underworld franchise - fronted by Kate Beckinsale - started in 2003 and went on for five.

She should have just said oops, I was wrong, I apologize.

Instead she made a blah blah blah blah word salad followed by excuses. Jesus chick, just admit you were full of yourself.

Pay attention here, folks. This is what happens when you drop out of middle-school and go into acting. It does NOT make you smarter.

reply

She was, however, the first young woman to star in a teen-aimed action movie franchise where the hero is a teenage girl.

reply

Hunger Games was aimed at general audiences , not solely teens, not so different than Joan of Arc film The Messengers

She said dumb thing because she is uneducated and probably never saw and heard of Resident Evil, Underworld, Catwoman, Salt. And she forgot about Tomb Raider and didnt make connection with Ellen Ripley and Aliens. Someone during production lied to her that she was the first ever female action hero in lead role and she bought it and remembered it. Then dropped that during interview.

Instead of apologizing and saying she will educate herself or something - she said some nonsense that of course she knew and thats now what she meant. Which makes her sound even like a more idiot and stupid entitled narcissist.

This would be forgivable if she was born in this century.
