Did he just join the Empire?

He made a wise move. He's not up for reelection until 2024. In 2004 Republicans were staunchly behind W Bush. By 2008 not so much. The same thing will happen with Trump by 2024 so this impeachment vote won't have any impact on Mitt's reelection.

He makes me ashamed that I voted for him in 2012, but to be fair, we didn't know his true nature back then.

So even though Republicans control 2.5 branches of government(all 3 up until recently), have stacked the courts with decades of Trump cultist, and celebrate the fact they put children in cages, it's the other side that's the evil empire?

Personally, I think he hoped more would join him and he'd graciously offer to run for President in Trump's stead.

I don't think he even yet understands folks looked and said, "Romneycare...Obamacare...what's the difference?"

Romney did it because Trump committed impeachable offenses. The other Republican Senators failed on their duty.

Maybe if Trump wasn’t a criminal that is constantly breaking the law, Romney wouldn’t have cast that vote.
