Some of her film choices probably have to do with the age she was at when she started acting. She was 10 or 11 in "Because of Winn Dixie" and I love that movie. It actually had some depth to it because of the sadness in the protagonist's life and her discovery that people aren't always black-and-white and you have to take them for who they are now. Some of her family film roles have actually been my favorite. Topmost is Leslie Burke in Bridge to Terabithia. I think she was cool as the creepy little girl Loren in "The Reaping" even though the idea of the movie is better than it's actuality. I think she was adorable in "Race to Witch Mountain" and her character reminds me of Wanderer from "The Host" which Saoirse Ronan was in. Another favorite of mine was when she had a small part as Sam in "The Space Between" and she played a quasi-goth rebellious teen. Also, "The Way, Way Back" is a really good movie and I liked AnnaSophia's small part in it. She actually did do an R-rated film called "Sleepwalking" and it was one of her darkest projects. "Have Dreams Will Travel" or whatever title it's going by these days also has some pretty gritty subject matter.
I'm torn on Carrie Diaries. I think that AnnaSophia's Carrie is adorable, but I am so far behind in season two and can't even catch up online because I am that far back. I don't really want to buy the episodes. The Carrie Diaries isn't the kind of show that I watch typically. Right now I am following "Supernatural," "Bates Motel," "Weeds," and "The Good Wife." I mostly watch TCD to support AnnaSophia Robb. I do enjoy that she seems to be having so much fun filming the show and I think that is important.
Personally, I wouldn't want to see her do a risque role simply for the sake of shock value. I think there is a trend in doing explicit things with the idea that this demonstrates grown-up behavior and thus maturity, and I think that is a stumbling block. I personally would not want to support any raunchy, steamy, or scandalous projects.
I think it would be neat to see her in something that chilling, dark, ominous, scary, suspenseful, or to see her tackle heavy, gritty subject matter.Or also to see her get into more emotional fare. She's very good at heartfelt, imaginative, sentimental, inspiring stories. I think she could also handle good comedy roles that were quirky, deadpan, irreverent, and witty (something like "Saved!" "Juno," "Weeds," or "Mean Girls). Being who she is, I think AnnaSophia Robb would be good in stories that have social commentary because she has a lot of causes and cares about making a difference in the world.
I think she has the acting capacity for all of that. Some of her projects sounded similar to that, like "Pan" but never worked out for whatever reason. I don't think she has necessarily walled herself off from different projects. I am hoping that she will come out with more films.
