I think you're right though - something will happen to Ukraine first. Crazy if it does land up being a tactical nuclear strike but the US does seem hellbent on pushing Putin in that direction...
My hope is that basic human greed will prevail. Putin is in a very favourable position domestically at the moment, serious escalation would be no good for anyone.

And now They’re literally launching missiles into Russia, trying to get them to respond.

There *was* a very generous offer by Putin for Ukraine to unconditionally surrender, disarm completely, be partitioned, and have Russian be installed as the official language in what was left of Ukraine.
For reasons no one can explain, Ukraine turned down this magnanimous offer to end the hostilities. Maybe Ukraine was looking for a sweeter deal?
