Overrated band and singer

Mumbling and copying the Pistols/Beatles etc etc isn't talent.

Al Yankovic sang better.

reply

DISAGREE...A LOT.

reply

Being provocative for the sake of garnering attention is lame.

reply

You know what, I agree.

And what's more, it boggles my mind that they're hailed as this great reaction against commercialism in music when the fact is, they became a thing because MTV and Geffen Records decided they would be a thing.

reply

FALSE.

reply

Have you listened to Bleach Bateman?
Nirvana became a “thing” because they shifted the paradigm as Joy Division did a decade prior. People were drowning in the stale and boring waters of glam rock, Nirvana among others, pioneered a new sound, and were among the first ones through the wall, they deserve every ounce of credit given to them.
You don’t have to like someone’s band or sound to respect what they’ve done for the evolution of music.

reply

When I think of In Utero, it's like they were deliberately trying to de-commercialize with it being so offensive and raw sounding. But, the fans just liked them even more, lol.

IIRC the studio was not happy with the raw sound of the album, but then it was another smash hit and then Bush had Razorblade Suitcase written for them with the same sound because of it.

reply

That’s exactly what they did with In Utero, Nirvana didn’t run, they sprinted in the opposite direction of what their label, MTV, and even a good portion of what their fans wanted from them. They stayed true to themselves and instead of selling out, doubled down on as you put, putting out good music and remaining regular dudes, Nirvana’s legitimacy is undeniable. A true diamond in the rough.

reply

Sorry, but I just don't see what their legacy was other than replacing loud and vacuous music that was most likely already on its way out, mostly because MTV decided to foist them upon our undeserving ears day in and day out, with a worse brand of loud vacuity and making pop music insufferable for a couple of years before (thankfully) disappearing entirely and leaving barely any trace behind.

reply

Nothing to apologize for, different strokes for different folks.

reply

So, no apologies then, lol.

reply

Good one.

Kurt hated how commercialized Nirvana was becoming. They were so popular it couldn't be stopped, however.

He famously ignored Axl Rose repeated begging to open for GnR. Nirvana's philosophy to play good music and be regular dudes was legit.

reply

I had a boyfriend who was a diehard Nirvana fan and tried turning me on to them, but I couldn't get into their music. Too dreary and Kurt's garbled mumbling was too distracting. Don't get the hype, but grunge wasn't my thing anyway.

reply

Sure
