sorry fans but I think he's a phony

While making himself clear in front of the press that he has turned down "many" offers given by "big Hollywood producers" for whatever BS reasons that make himself look good, he seems to forget that fact that he HAD participated in at least one hollywood movie before. Uh, okay so now that he is "kinda" successful, he gets to diss hollywood? And not to mention the bad sh*ts he had said about Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

I do agree that hollywood DOES destory some of the good kung-fu stars out there like Jet Li, but let's keep in mind one of the reasons that kung-fu is now so popular even among western culture is because its uniqueness stands out even more in such culture, in other words, hollywood PROMOTES it even more for letting Chinese fighters kick western asses. And let's also not forget how hollywood made Bruce Lee a Chinese hero.

If Mr. Yen never liked what hollywood makes out of Chinese kung-fu, he wouldn't have said yes to hollywood in the first place. So, yes, I think he is a potential phony.

Great comments D i P, and I thank you for being rational :)

However it was more or less personal that I admit I never liked Donnie Yen from the get-go. Other than what I think about his attitude, I hate the fact that he likes to compare himself with Jet & Jackie, which both are obviously more successful (at least more well-known) than he is in Hollywood, or worldwide. I've heard a couple times of how Donnie disses both of them sarcastically, but I've never heard Jet or Jackie say anything bad about him, not in front of the press at least.

How Donnie presents himself just makes me think that this man has excessive ego. I respect his attitude towards Hollywood, but he could've (and I think should've) said something like "I remember Hollywood did me a favor, gave me a shot, but I must humbly say that I prefer making movies in my country." That would be an honorable speech. But NO NO NO, he just has to make himself look like the national hero by showing he doesn't give a sh*t about Hollywood. What's worse is that instead of simply saying he refused Hollywood movies, he has to go aroung saying MANY BIG Hollywood producers came knocking on his door which he turned down.

While Jet Li preserves his modesty all the way through, Donnie Yen seems to think he is big enough to look down at people now that he is somewhat famous. Of course we don't know exactly what they are like, and we don't see all the truth behind. But my point is, as celebrities, the self images they present in public are the most important. And from what I've seen so far, I think Donnie Yen has got way too much ego.

Donnie was like that several years ago, but i think his behaviour has changed for the better. I read that in the past he was in trouble for saying something bad to Sammo Hung and Yuen Woo Ping, but i don`t know what was exactly said. Perhaps someone knows more about these feuds? Perhaps these feuds was exaggerated by the media, since they love overdo stuff.

There was rumours that they ignored him for quite some time because of his hurtful comments. That`s probably why he didn`t work with Sammo until 2005 in SPL. They must have buried the hatchet before making that film.

That is what I read also on the 'Net and some entertainment magazines. Because of these alleged feuds with Sammo and Woo Ping, Donnie's career hit a snag from the mid '90s onwards and that was the period when he was tipped to be successful by industry watchers. Because of these 'indiscretions', Donnie ended up working in several average, but entertaining, HK-Filipino productions instead, like High Voltage, Crystal Hunt and Cheetah on Fire while Jet Li and Jackie Chan continued where they left off in the 80s into the new decade with a string of action hits.

It wasn't until 2005 when Donnie struck gold with S.P.L. Although recognition for him was far overdue as he was 42 then, I think it was a case of better late than never.

The one interview I saw had him talking about MMA and saying he won't be performing like Jackie Chan rolling around tables and props - or something to that effect. But then he qualified it as "No disrespect to Jackie Chan, that's his style, but it's not MY style".

I just think he's too frank for his own good... and I mean American-frank. No hedging or saving face, which comes off as rude to Asians.
