shareDune is a remake and Blade Runner - which bombed - a sequel. Arrival is based on a book. Sit down, Denis.
sharefair enough, but most people would not call those films generic or standard hollywood output. they're not like much else you'll see playing in a multiplex.
i like the mcu stuff, but it's fair to say they do have the feeling out being churned out by a factory from a well used template.
that's ok with me! there's lots to be said for films that follow a formula. it's a good formula! lots of fun to be had with it.
"but most people would not call those films generic or standard hollywood output. they're not like much else you'll see playing in a multiplex."
They are also considered bombs.
well, lots of great movies lose money, and lots of pretty generic, silly movies make a fortune. at least they're great/silly to me. eye of the beholder & all that.
& up until br2049, he had a pretty solid track record as far as i can tell.
leaving out the early relatively low budget stuff...
prisoners - $46m budget, $122m ww box office
sicario - $30m budget, $85m ww bo
arrival - $47m budget, $203m ww bo
that's a pretty solid run. it's not gonna keep the lights on forever, but given the baked in level of risk always involved in film, that's a string of solid success.
Except your argument has nothing to do with what he's saying and you've totally missed the point.
shareMovies based on comics are "cut and paste", but movies based on other people's movies, books, or movies aren't? Stop.
sharelol, again you miss the point. Holy shit.
shareIt's not about movies based on comics or novels, or even remakes, and he even references Nolan as someone who doesn't do that (despite his TDK movies). He's saying that the MCU movies all seem the same, as though they're following a template, a formula, interchangeable. Do you really expect something different and interesting with each new one? It's a Happy Meal whether you get a Coke or a 7-Up, a cheeseburger or a chicken sandwich, fries or onion rings. I don't have anything against their existence, but that's his point.
shareIron Man, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame are practially carbon copies of one another.
The man is complaining about a lack of originality and his movies - most of which tank at the box office - are based on something that already existed. Sit. Down.
I'm getting the feeling you glanced at the article rather than reading it. You've created a Strawman here.
If BR2049, Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival all seemed similar, you'd be in a better place to call him a hypocrite. But it has nothing at all to do with adaptations, remakes, etc. It's only about what you choose to do with them, artistically -- or what you're allowed to do with them, artistically.
“If we’re talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. It doesn’t take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted.”
From above, MCU movies have to conform to that mold. No matter who writes or directs, the notes and editing will bring it back in line. The masses like fast food. And just like fast food, this sells better. But no one says, "Give my compliments to the chef." at Burger King. It's sugar, salt, and fat -- in little cardboard boxes, on a tray, every time. I hoped Zhao would be able to do something different, but judging by the trailers, Eternals seems like it's ticking Avengers boxes to begin a familiar cycle.
Tell me how Iron Man, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame are "the same mold".
Fucker is complaining about a lack of originality and his biggest movies are all remakes or adapted from something that already existed. He's got no leg to stand on.
I would rather watch the worst Marvel movie than Villenueve's best movie.
shareHe is right
shareFilm Snobs are annoying
I don't enjoy Rom-Coms very often so I just ignore them
Why call millions of fans zombies or simpletons for enjoying a certain genre of movies?!
agreed.
& there's nothing wrong with being formulaic! a skillfully made movie that hews to a formula is incredibly fun and satisfying to watch!
yes, people should challenge themselves and try to read and watch all kinds of different things. fine. granted.
but simple, fun movies are simple and fun to watch. let us have our simple fun ffs.
You made my point better than I did damo, big dummy that I am😄
My wife has recently started playing 'New Country' music and it's awful...But I'm not filing for divorce about it, millions of people like that music so who the hell am I to judge?!
ha, thanks.
this is something i say all the time, but i'm fine repeating myself.
(as i once heard a golf pro say when giving lessons: 'i may bore you, i may annoy you, but i hope i never confuse you.')
one of the many glories of living in a free society and a relatively free economy is that we all get to curate our own lives. we get to eat what we like and listen and watch whatever suits our fancy. & if we hate something someone else likes, that doesn't hurt anyone else even one little bit.
we are entitled to our preferences! & if lots of people like something i think is silly, well...it means something to them, and it means something to the people who made it, so i should buzz off and mind my own business and like whatever i like.
i think i may have talked myself into hating denis villeneuve a little bit now, lol.
Villeneuve is a rare breed, making movies for adults. Its better business to make family movies than movies for lonely old farts like me, because kids bring parents and whole families to theater.
shareVillynuffy’s movies are as lame as Marvel movies, lol
sharethere were 28 'blondie' movies made between 1938 & 1950.
studios have never been too reticent to turn out product if it's reliably making money.
this is not a new characteristic.

Of course.
Dune comes out in a few weeks, just like when Scorsese stirred the pot before The Irishman came out.
