Well I think he was incredibly lucky. The odds are - if he doesn't meet John Lennon and Paul McCartney - where does he go? If it was George alone I doubt either him or George would have made it out ENgland.
It took those great original songs Lennon and McCartney wrote to get The Beatles going.
Where would Ringo have been without those two?
Anyway, to give him due props, he did do some outstanding original drumming while in The Beatles. Check out "Rain" as an example.
On his own, the only track I liked from him was "Photograph".
"Photograph" is outstanding - a great song. RIngo's best work, IMO.
Concerning their post-Beatles careers, I always enjoyed Ringo's songs much more than Paul's with his group Wings. Some were good. But I really liked Ringo's songs and I thought he was a better singer. I think Paul's voice usually sounded a bit "worn out" as if he sang too much and too loud with the Beatles without having formal voice lessons.
Out of season but I want to mention Ringo’s song, The Christmas Dance.
I find it SO much more enjoyable than John or Paul’s Christmas songs. It’s so fun and danceable! I have never been able to find out for sure but I think George is singing backup.
