General opinion of Ringo as an artist?

Lets face it. He was always considered The Beatles' "weakest link".

However, I heard a song by him I've never heard before and it's a damn good rocker:

"Devil Woman":

I'll admit I'm more a punk and an alt music guy, so I don't like much classic rock.

I'm just surprised, Ringo has strong masculine vocals, even if he lacks nuance.

Of course I know his solo megahits "It Don't Come Easy" and "Photograph". But they never inspired me.

Well I think he was incredibly lucky. The odds are - if he doesn't meet John Lennon and Paul McCartney - where does he go? If it was George alone I doubt either him or George would have made it out ENgland.

It took those great original songs Lennon and McCartney wrote to get The Beatles going.

Where would Ringo have been without those two?

Anyway, to give him due props, he did do some outstanding original drumming while in The Beatles. Check out "Rain" as an example.

On his own, the only track I liked from him was "Photograph".

"Photograph" is outstanding - a great song. RIngo's best work, IMO.

Yes, without The Beatles we wouldn't even know who Ringo and George Harrison were.

I admit Photograph is an excellent and well crafted song. But it's too polished and I prefer the rawness of "Devil Woman".

Concerning their post-Beatles careers, I always enjoyed Ringo's songs much more than Paul's with his group Wings. Some were good. But I really liked Ringo's songs and I thought he was a better singer. I think Paul's voice usually sounded a bit "worn out" as if he sang too much and too loud with the Beatles without having formal voice lessons.

But who am I to judge? I can't carry a tune!

reply

Well, I never liked McCartney and Wings. I seem to be getting agreement on this thread that McCartney's solo work is the worst of all four.

Out of season but I want to mention Ringo’s song, The Christmas Dance.

I find it SO much more enjoyable than John or Paul’s Christmas songs. It’s so fun and danceable! I have never been able to find out for sure but I think George is singing backup.
