Jimmy did a lot of good for charities etc, and yet at the same tie, was a depraved sex monster.

Its not complicated. A lot, if not all, of the “good” things he did gave him access to his victims. Being philanthropic does not make you a good person. It does however provide an evil person with a cloak of “goodness.”

SteveG is correct and no offence but you sound a bit naive. Raising millions for charity and building hospitals gave him power, he became "untouchable" as far as the Police and public were concerned. It gave him unrestricted access to vulnerable patients who he abused, and would plant massive seeds of doubt if any concerns were raised. His high profile charity work gave him access to the Royal Family and to the Prime Ministers of the time, he was rubbing shoulders with the most powerful people in the country. That's partly why most of his victims of the time remained silent, who would believe their word against a celebrity who had raised millions for charity and was friends with Charles and Diana and Thatcher?
Rolf Harris was similar, although on a smaller scale. He even produced and released an educational programme to show children what kind of "touching" was wrong, and how to respond to unwanted advances from adults. All the while he was abusing his daughter's friend. There was nothing "good" about Savile, the works he did was for his benefit and to make him untouchable so he could carry on his depraved lifestyle, not to benefit sick children.

Pretty sure he knew quite well that throwing a few quid to charity out of his millions would make a perfect smokescreen to enable his pederasty to continue.
In my hometown we had a beloved local personality who was on TV from the early 70s to the early 2010s. He was a pillar of the community and raised millions for assorted youth charities. They even named a part of the Children's Hospital after him.
However, literally everyone in town had a rumor or a story about him molesting young boys. I used to see him at rock concerts, always with a teenage boy or two. His best friend and chauffeur was arrested at a downtown hotel, naked and chasing a teenage girl down the hall with a rape kit of knife, rope, lube etc. Nothing ever stuck to the celebrity and he died of cancer and is still honored to this day.

Someone in the documentary explained these two sides of him. He said ‘You can’t understand Jimmy without also understanding his Catholic beliefs”. Catholics believe they have to atone for their sins. Jimmy thought as long as he did one thing good for every bad thing then he had a 50/50 chance of salvation. He even admitted to keeping some sort of mental tab of debits and credits of sins/good deeds that he would show St. Peter at the pearly gates. Demented.

By the other posts it looks like this documentary if you want to even call it that has done what it wanted paint a very biased picture this is something netflix do very well.
It is all one sided you have a man who has been deceased for over a decade now and lets go back to when the first reports came in he was dead.
I know people with influence and this guy didnt have the power these people are claiming the other problem is it's one side of the story with the man being found guilty by the media and the public not real evidence when this happens no one is going to defend him they would be destroyed as well.

*ANY* good he did for charities, and, remember, a lot of these were *children's* charities, was completely obliterated by the countless number of children he sexually abused. 😠
It's not like he cured cancer or helped bring about a truce in some war-torn part of the world (not that either of these things would be a defence/mitigation for abusing children). The 'good' he did is inextricably connected, and thus ENTIRELY overshadowed by his evil. It's akin to someone raising money for BLM, and then going out at night lynching Black people.
The same applies to Rolf Harris. Apparently he was on a breakfast show during the 80s where he was ironically highlighting a campaign to protect children from sexual predators, advising them to effectively 'just say no' to any adult who tried to touch them. What good is such advice if men like Harris end up committing the very abuses they're supposedly trying to 'protect' children from?
It makes me wonder that all the money Savile raised was simply a front to shield him from any criticism/concern regarding his 'nocturnal activities,' in which case, that money is effectively *toxic*.
