Indeed, she is.
shareThe woman was something.
shareI was shocked that mine was the first post.
Here's a very interesting old IMDb post:
During the war she had lived in a Japanese Internment camp in CA and afterwards the family moved to Chicago. The already developing 10 yr old was walking down the street one day and she was pulled into an alley and was gang raped by 5 guys….it was thought to be due to lingering hatred of the Japanese.share
… she was put in a reform school because she was convicted of tempting the boys into raping her! Horrible story and believe it or not; back then…many people still believed that women brought rape on to themselves….even at age 10!?
Anyway, when she got out, her father taught her the martial arts to protect herself and she formed a vigilante gang of girls who wore black leather jackets, jeans and boots who would roam the neighborhood to make sure the girls were safe. They kicked butt.
Wow, reads like a backstory for one of her characters.
shareI live in a part of LA County which has an old Japanese-American community dating back before World War II. There are Japanese biker chicks here. Reminds me of Tura Satana.
shareI bet they are not to be messed with!
shareThey're very Americanized. Also, you have to give kudos to Tura as an Asian-American in the 60's doing such roles. It's a stark contrast to the stereotypes in a 60's movie like "Egg Flower Drum Song".
shareI guess her stature and physique opened those doors for her. If she'd been a more 'conventional slip of a thing' she'd probably have been stuck in stereotype land.
