Well isn't he?

No, it is a cultural way of life for them. They have a subculture that's partially dictated by the Torah, but also has customs reinforced by everyone within it. Take a look at the way they live within their communities, versus the non-Jews around them, and you'll find a number of aspects that are different from regular Americans (or other countries they live in).

Some eat Kosher food (not all of them), none of them eat pork, their kids are taught Hebrew and Yiddish in a separate school from gentile kids, they sometimes have large families and very close ties with relatives (often within the same general area, or across the US), they have a separate ceremony for baby boys compared to gentile ones, there's the Bar Mitzvah ceremony for 13-year-old boys, they never celebrate Christmas but Hanukkah instead, their young adults almost always marry other Jews, the moms are often the rulers of their homes in a way that outdoes gentile moms, they choose to work in specific job areas because they have connections there, such as banking, accounting, medicine, business, or entertainment, and they think it's okay for their guys to screw around with shicksa girls, but they don't dare touch their own unmarried women until the wedding night. Their women are even determined to make their future (often arranged) married relationship work because outside of their community, they don't have much of a chance of finding a guy who could stand them, versus within their community.

One reason they have so many people with bad eyesight, curly hair, big noses, and a high incidence of Crohn's Disease and ovarian cancer, is because a lot of Jews are marrying their cousins, rather than bringing people from outside their community to energize the gene pool. They're very strict on who their kids can marry when they reach legal marrying age, and it's an issue in all Jewish communities around the world. The only reason they haven't bred themselves out of existence is because during the Diaspora (over the past millennium), they had to relax rules about who their sons could marry, and they were forced to bring in local girls from whatever country they'd moved to into the community and the faith through marriage. (That's why we have so many different types of Jews in the world now, such as the Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jews). Once their numbers were back up, they put the stricter rules back up, though once in a while, even today, you find a Jewish guy talking a gentile woman into marrying into his family.
