None of his films were major hits - His most famous role, A Night at the Roxbury was a cult hit, but not a financial one. In fact, Kattan has never been in a film (excluding Superbad) which was a major hit and where he was in a leading role. Success breeds success and Kattan just hasn’t had any.
He’s not conventionally attractive - If Kattan were taller (No, he’s not the 5′8″ that he claims to be) then he might have been more successful with his exotic look. He isn’t and he hasn’t been.
The Curse of Monkeybone - Kattan was in the 2001 disaster Monkeybone and that may affected his career like it did the stars of the film Brendan Fraser and Bridget Fonda. The only people who came out of the film largely unscathed were Giancarlo Esposito and Bob Oedenkirk who found fame in the Breaking Bad narrative universe. Had Monkeybone hit, then Kattan might have been at a higher level than he is.
He didn’t have much success on television apart from SNL - While he was a primary character on the sitcom The Middle for two seasons, he was reduced to a recurring character after the second season. He doesn’t seem to have been able to land either his own starring role, or a significant costarring one.
He’s apparently been dealing with an addiction to pain medication for much of the last 20 years - Kattan injured himself doing a pratfall on an episode of SNL and he apparently broke some neck vertebrae at the time. He became addicted to pain medication which resulted in an arrest for DUI in 2014. Kattan has explained it as why he’s much “stiffer” now than he was in the 1990s; however he hasn’t stated whether or not he’s overcome that addiction.
