Too intense?

I think he's a good actor but maybe needs to tone down the intensity. Subtlety goes a long way. He was great as the Kray twins though. Genuinely felt like two different characters.

It might be appropriate if the character is written to be crazy or a hothead. It could also be the director that calls for more intensity or "extra." I've heard him say he idolizes Gary Oldman. Oldman has also played quite a few jealous, insecure criminals who tend to be manic and quick-tempered(Jackie Flannery, Drexl, Stansfield). He's been accused of overacting too.
Maybe he enjoys those characters, but I think he's capable of playing calm or unhinged. There are real people with those personalities.

Funny you say that because Gary Oldman is my favourite actor, and he can definitely be accused of being intense but with him it comes across more organic and natural.

Hardy has mentioned that he idolizes Oldman so maybe he's trying to channel him.

He definitely tries to channel Oldman, it’s actually become quite distracting since I noticed it, It comes more naturally to Oldman because he’s simply a better actor and has more experience in the real world as he’s from a working class background whereas Hardy is, despite his tough guy facade, really an entitled posh kid

Not at all.

He is capable of great subtlety. Watch Locke if you disagree.

He's a brilliant actor and probably one of the few working today who can pull off pure machismo. We need more like him.
