This man deserves a wall of posts here. He created, wrote, directed, and acted in Detectorists, one of the best little brilliant shows I've seen in a very long time. Even though he was pulling multiple duties, in every one of his roles he excelled. The humanity he brought to Andy and the other characters was noticeable and appreciated.

Agreed, he's very talented.

Did you see the recent sad news about his sister-in-law?

reply

I had not, but I just looked it up. Horrible! I'm so sorry for the family.

reply

Yes, very sad.

reply

Saw him recently in a crime show called Accused UK, he's a talented actor.

reply

Thanks for the title! I'll check it out.

It's sad that UK shows are so short. 4 seasons and only 20 episodes? You can watch all that in 1-2 days.

reply

You've got that right. I was looking into watching The Office UK after the buzz about the US version in recent years. Office UK has just 14 episodes compared to 201 for Office US! Either UK didn't do enough, or US did way too many!

This isn't a one-off either. All the British shows follow this pattern, and then they make you wait forever between the precious few episodes.

I think about the classic American TV shows. They ran at least 25-30 episodes from September to May like clockwork and without fail. The good old days.

reply

Yes. Just think of the tv show "Ghosts" (very popular right now). There is an US and an UK version. The UK version has been running for a lot longer yet the US version already has more episodes. The UK should change this IMO.

I found this article that might explain some of the forces that have put this frustrating British TV pattern in place.

Even American TV shows are getting shorter and shorter as time goes on. Here's another article about that if you're interested.

Thanks, will check them out.

Ricky Gervais said he decided to follow the example of the great John Cleese, who called time on Fawlty Towers after just two seasons (12 episodes in total), determined to go out 'at the top' (although, ironically, after all this time Cleese is now looking at revisiting FT).

reply

Thanks for the rationale behind the short Office UK series. I didn't know it was Mr. Gervais's decision.

reply

No problem. He said his thinking was 'If ****ing John Cleese thinks that's best, who the **** am I to think any different?'
