Why Did He Never Become a Bigger Name?

I just watched the brilliant and underrated Prince of the City (which is free to watch, and in good quality, on the net), and he's excellent in a very demanding lead role, and reminds me a lot of Colin Farrell.

He had the charisma, looks and acting range to play a variety of roles, both heroes and villains, lawmen and criminals, but his career never really took off, and it's strange because I don't know of anything dodgy about the man. It's not like he's been cancelled, as far as I know. So, why didn't/doesn't he get more work?

He over-acted a lot in Prince of City. I remember watching that movie a years ago, and I couldn’t make it to the end (the plot also dragged on too much; the film was too long)

He was a B-lister for a while. Not a horrible career. I remember he did OK in a sitcom, “Everwood” or something was the name of the show

I always thought he'd be a bigger name. Maybe he came along in the wrong era. I could imagine him headlining Philip Marlowe/Sam Spade kinda stuff in the 1940s.

His tv movies were hits. R.I.P.

He drifted into Horror for a while and never really recovered! I liked him in Handgun from 93 or 94. Fun flick. He was great in that.

I think he became one of those reliable actors, who appears in everything, like Harry Dean Stanton. Probably wasn't too picky about his roles and it made him famous, but not really an A lister.
