He was very much in the same league as directors such as Tony Scott and Adrian Lyne, in that he was more of a pop visual stylist and aesthetic-based director than a serious storyteller. The difference between him and those guys though, was that Schumacher never found his calling in any particular genre. He did a couple films that could be considered mild classics in the respective genres they're in (The Lost Boys, Falling Down, The Client) but never did any follow-ups to any of those said films that were successful enough to establish the kind of director he really was. He seemed complacent with just accepting whatever scripts that flew his way regardless of genre or style, while never truly excelling at any one of them. As such, it makes sense why he's mostly just known as the guy who put nipples on the Batsuit. Overall, I'd say he's slightly better than an outright hack, as he did have a keen eye in regards to visuals and performances, but he certainly could've amounted to more had if he chose better scripts.
