Movies he should have directed instead of rotting in jail

He should have directed the first Captain America movie. It started off pretty good but turned bland. McT would have made that movie much much better. Right up his ally.

Not a World of Warcraft player myself but he might have been able to hammer something of quality out of it. Also think that Atomic Blonde could have been OK if it was utterly retread and a different director. McT would have fit if they made major plot changes.

Other movies in the last few decades that would have been improved by his hand?

reply

i wouldn't mind him taking on world of warcraft. never played it, never saw it but if it could be close to something like a conan the barbarian i'd be interested.

reply

Indeed. Or better yet, an actual Conan movie. I loved The 13th Warrior. It had balls.

reply

yes, i'm a fan of 13th warrior. something like that.

reply

He's in jail? For what?

reply

Not anymore. He spent over a year in the pokey for wire tapping someone. It is a weird tale.
I hope he directs again.

EDIT: got sentence wrong

reply

now, wire tappers post it up on youtube, and to the news for sensationalism. country gone stoopid

reply

Huh? I thought he went to jail for not paying his taxes.

reply

Nope. He hired some well known Hollywood detective to wire tap the producer of the worst movie he ever directed, Rollerball. When the detective got busted for lots of that kind of thing, he went down with him.

They say that he is hated in Hollywood now. I'd like to know why he wanted that producer tapped.

reply

Hmm. Wasn't aware of that. All these years I thought it was tax evasion.

reply

Fascinating

You really rung my bell with this

Never woulda guessed. Also its a tragedy it interrupted a top career.

Also i find it somewhat poignant and sad.

reply

I would have liked to have seen him make some kick ass James Bond films with Pierce Brosnan.

reply

OMG best answer. Imagine two from him instead of TWINE and DAD. In fact, any Bond lead directed by him. I'd have gone to see this new one if he directed it (first Bond film I don't have interest in seeing)

reply

Some great sequels to GoldenEye would have been welcome! I wonder if Broccoli ever had him mind after the success he had with Die Hard.

reply

Dredd
Snowpiercer
Deadpool
The Magnificent 7
Prince of Persia

reply

Dredd was perfect. I would not change a thing.
Didn't much care for the writing of Snowpiercer so I don't think a better director would have menat much.

The rest I agree. McT would have made those much better.

reply

He could have directed Patriot Games and have it star Alec Baldwin, but they both objected to the subject matter owing to their Irish roots.

reply

Fools.

reply

damn, this is the first i've ever heard of the jail time. that's too bad. i like him

reply

Predator 4 (with Arnold & Danny Glover)

Die Hard 5 (with Tom Hardy as Grubers son)

reply

That's a very good suggestion. I think he'd have been the perfect director for that first Captain America film. The Russo Brothers knocked it out of the park with the next two films, but the first one is one of the weaker entries in the MCU, and a little McTiernan magic would have been ideal.

reply

He’d never make a Marvel superhero pic. He’s interested in real movies about real people.

reply

Yes, when I look at his resume I see nothing but films about real people doing real people things. Maybe they could have switched from Red Skull to a Predator to lure him in?

reply

You’re missing the point, listen to McTiernan explain: https://youtu.be/sm-ozgWsld0?si=bXraARs8ie9uC7zP&t=2404

reply

He can explain all he wants. Doesn't mean I don't want to see Captain America fight a Predator on top of Nakatomi Tower.

reply

You may well want that, I’m just pointing out why he would never make a Marvel superhero pic.

reply

You don't seem to understand what he's saying in that interview. He's not saying he wants films about literal real people. He's saying he wants characters that represent reality, which is quite different, and in all honesty, a Captain America film could be exactly that. Predator was that, so was Die Hard. The Winter Soldier was that. Honestly, after listening to what he said, I think he's even more qualified to have made the first Captain America film, because he'd have made a film that told a relatable, real story rather than the poorly conceived action film we got.

reply

No, you’re wrong and you’re just refusing to admit it, and using deceit like that ‘literal real people’ strawman.

McTiernan has zero interest in making a Marvel superhero film as is clear from the interview.

reply

I'm not refusing to admit anything. I'd never seen that interview, so I watched the part you linked to. What I heard him say was that movies are no longer about real people, they are about unrelatable archetypes and overused cliches, and he wants to make films telling real stories about real people.

You are asserting that means he wants only to make stories completely grounded in reality, with no supernatural or hyperreal elements to them whatsoever. You can even take it to mean he only wants to make documentaries or biopics from here on it.

I believe he's open to making any type or genre of film, as long as the film is about real people facing real issues. It doesn't matter if the protagonists are soldiers stuck in a jungle who have to fight a CGI'ed alien or farmers trying to eke out a living in troubled times, as long as the stories and characters aren't over-the-top camp, he'll do it.

If I'm misunderstanding him, then I'm wrong, but that's how I interpret what he said.

reply

Do not tell me what I am asserting. Your strawman has nothing to do with my position.

I’ve already made my assertions on this topic, so if you want to know what they are then go back and read them, and I’ve linked to McTiernan’s own words… and it’s clear that he has zero interest in making a Marvel superhero film.

reply

You don't understand the meaning of a strawman.

reply

You created a false representation of my point (starting with ‘you’re asserting…’) and attacked it - the very definition of the strawman fallacy.

So either you don’t understand the meaning of a strawman or you’re pretending not to because you’ve been found out. Either way not a good look.

reply

Whenever I encounter someone like you online I can't help but wonder how you got this way, and how you function in day to day life.

reply

It’s just telling the plain truth, it makes day to day life great.

When you start being honest you won’t find all the truth-tellers you encounter online so painful. You’ll realise that we’re helping you.

reply

"Telling the truth." What you're doing is trolling for arguments. You can't accept that your opinion is only that, an opinion. Rather than discuss one another's opinions like adults, you treat a conversation like a debate in which you are tasked with proving a point.

We both listened to what McTiernan said, and we each interpreted it differently. We could have had an interesting discussion about that, but instead you adopted an "I'm right and you're wrong and if you disagree with me you're a dummy!" stance that leaves no room for any friendly chit chat. That's not honesty, that's immaturity.
