I do think Meryl Streep is the greatest actress ever. She is versatile and can play any type of role in any genre. Streep elevates every film she is in and disappears into the role. I enjoy all her performances, even when she is in a film that I don't really like. What do you think? Is she the best? If not, who is?

She certainly has an impressive technical range, and in recent years has found a warmth and humour that was missing in many of her early roles, but she tends only to be as good as the role as written. In certain roles the 'acting' is too obvious. She can be mannered and overly theatrical for my tastes.
My favourite Streep roles: Kramer vs. Kramer, A Cry in the Dark, Defending Your Life, The Bridges of Madison County. She can be brilliant, no question.

shareI don't think anyone has addressed the subject better than Meryl herself who has said "there's no such thing as the best actress". Acting is a subjective art and the difference in opinions as to who is the best should be cherished rather than fought over.
That said, film acting is unquestionably better today than ever and Meryl has been the grandmother of this elevation.
