I can't help but think of his appearance in Turk 182. But he's only playing himself so I don't think that counts.

I know him mostly from GoodFellas

But I'm now watching the original Law & Order, and he's one of the main detectives beginning in season 2. Could this role be one of his top-3?

reply

Yes, it is for me. This is the first role I actually remember seeing him in (I didn't watch "Goodfellas" until a year or two later). I really liked his character and was upset when he left the show (Apparently, like George Zdundza, he didn't like filming in the cold environment of NYC because he thought it was hurting his singing voice).

I have a movie called "Dummy" that he was in, and that to me is his most impressive role. He plays a deaf lawyer trying to defend a mute & deaf man (played by LeVar Burton) accused of murder. It was a TV movie. Anyway, Paul did an awesome job at not only playing a caring, concerned and dedicated lawyer doing his best to help the guy, but he also created a very believable deaf accent/way of speaking.

The first thing I ever saw Paul in was "The Stuff" and then "Dick Tracy" and then I think "Goodfellas", then years later he was on a few episodes of a show I like called "Still Standing", then I saw him in "Repo: The Genetic Opera", and that's about it. Whenever I hear his name or if someone is talking about him for some reason, I always think of the movie "Dummy". He was so awesome in that. To me, that is his defining role.

I clicked on this post to see if anyone included Dummy as one of his Top 3. I'm glad you did, runemesa. I have nothing to add; you pinpointed exactly why Paul's performance was so impeccable. I still think of that movie; Paul gave an excellent closing argument. He did a great job imitating a deaf person without going so far as to lampoon the disability.

I liked him as Nikolai Rozhenko in the Star Trek TNG episode "Homeward." A lot to do and he embraced a role that did not scream tough guy.
