Why Steve Guttenberg doesn't make many movies anymore

How does a guy go from being one of the defining movie stars of an entire decade to virtually falling off the pop culture map? Just ask Steve Guttenberg. He earned his first professional credit in 1977, when he was just 19, and has film and television credits listed for 2018. That's a span of 41 years — an incredible feat in any business, let alone the fickle entertainment industry. Still, there's no denying we don't see him as much — or in anywhere near the same light — as we did during the peak of Guttenberg's box office success.

In the 1980s, Guttenberg rode high on a wave of top-grossing movies. He's perhaps best known for starring as Carey Mahoney in the bawdy Police Academy franchise, but he also starred in fundamentally '80s offerings like Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby, and Short Circuit.

Since then, the frequency and relative quality associated with his projects have changed tremendously, and his profile has faded along the way. Missing this '80s icon at your local cineplex and wondering whatever happened to him? We've rounded up the real reasons you don't hear from Steve Guttenberg anymore.

I remember reading a comment (and I don't know for sure if it was meant to be sincere or not) suggesting that Steve Guttenberg was kind of the Paul Rudd of his heyday. I suppose that in that sense, Guttenberg's initial popularity was that he was a good looking, slightly goofy, and seemingly non-threatening guy.

I don't know how truthful this is, but Steve Guttenberg supposedly, doesn't appreciate the blog article that asked about "what the hell happened" to him?

Many, many years ago, someone claiming to be friends with Steve Guttenberg emailed me. She said Steve was upset because he went in for an audition and the casting director told him that the second Google result for his name was “What the Hell Happened to Steve Guttenberg.” She said “the Gute” would be willing to fly me out to Hollywood for a movie premiere if I would take the article down. Crazy stuff.

MY DAUGHTER AND I ARE WATCHING THE SIXTH SEASON OF THE GOLDBERGS...I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THE GUTTENBERG HAS TAKEN A SUPPORTING ROLE...HE WAS PRETTY GOOD.

Steve Guttenberg’s career was actually boosted by the series of abominations known as the Police Academy franchise and his role in the surprise hit Cocoon. His solo efforts were mostly duds (excluding Short Circuit) and so by the 1990s, he was third banana in the surprisingly dull Three Men and Baby/Little Lady franchise. Following that he virtually disappeared from the big screen for host a of reasons many of which appear to be centered around substance abuse and questions regarding his sexual preferences.

Frankly, it was in the 1980s and early 1990s when Guttenberg was a major financial draw. After the mid-1990s this began to taper off and by the early 2000s he was directing television episodes and guest starring in minor roles. While Diner gave him his start and he did well 35 years ago, he doesn’t seem to have chosen roles that would have either boosted his profile or which could have become a successful franchise (excluding Police Academy, of course) that could have kept him the spotlight.

I think the main problem with Steve Guttenberg is that he’s a comedian who isn’t particularly funny on his own. He works best with ensembles. As he got more famous he was the clear star in films. And those films were more or less terrible. So then he’s in this place where he’s a great value-add to a film but he commanded a true star’s salary. And that ultimately hurt his career.

I remember seeing "Don't tell her it's me" in the theater with a bunch of girls that I knew. They all though he looked so hot when he lost the weight in that movie... then they had him grow a mullet, dyed his hair blonde, gave him earrings and made him speak with a dumb accent. Every girl in the group was like "Ew". That was the beginning of the end for him as a solo movie star. I don't remember a single movie that he was in after that aside from his (decades later) SY-FY channel stuff.

Still, the guy was a part of every 1970/1980s kids' lives for an entire decade. So, I think most of us from that time period have good memories of him.

I think most actors/actresses have a peak of about 5 -10 years where they are in a lot of movies. Guttenberg was nothing special and had his time in the spotlight.
