Jaws was the first iconic "summer tentpole" blockbuster. It's hard to think of 1975 without also thinking of Jaws.
Close Encounters rode on Star Wars' coattails to box office success. Had Star Wars not preceded it, I'm convinced it would have been a laughingstock or maybe just become a cult film like the Planet of the Apes sequels. It's even been speculated that Spielberg intentionally aimed to have Close Encounters ready for release after Star Wars had already been in theaters because he was convinced Star Wars would do well and his film would benefit.
