Why he never was a A-list actor?

Never understood this. Every performance I've seen from him was beyond excellent.
A complete actor.

So? Why?
He never had "friends" in special places? Agent?

reply

He's overrated and unlikable are among the reasons. His overacted Sherlock Homes impression on L&O:CI would be another.

reply

I love criminal intent. Very Columbo like, moreso than sherlock holmes.

reply

You should tell Dick Wolfe that as he acknowledges the Holmes homage. Like most movie version Holmes, Goren has the slow partner. Plus Moriatry and Irene Adler were rolled into one character.

reply

However, like Columbo, Goren focuses on psychology , and often draws perps into confessing.

reply

Yeah, my favorite L&O, and part of how I grew to love him as an actor.

reply

He's a good character actor. But he doesn't have the looks or charisma or luck (or perhaps any real interest in doing so) to play the lead in the kind of film that makes A-list careers.

reply

Some character actors become A-listers, Phillip Seymour Hoffman for example. I think it is unfair to say D'Onofrio hasn't been successful as he has found work in Hollywood for over 30 years, a feat only a miniscule number of actors can match.

reply

I agree with you, I think D'Onofrio has been very successful and personally I find him very watchable.
But if we define A-Listers as people you build a project around and expect a guaranteed audience for - then I don't think that includes D'Onofrio.

reply

It's the name, guys. How do you even pronounce that? This is why A-list actors usually have stage names.

reply

He's difficult to work with and usually demands changing his screenplay dialog. Many Directors and Producers consider that poisonous behavior that can derail a movie project. I say this from various articles I've read in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

reply

Cheers, did not know that.

reply

He known to be super dickhead! Very unprofessional.

reply

He is excellent. He makes his every role believable.
