This sort of reminds me of when the news broke out concerning Val Kilmer's throat cancer diagnosis. Val Kilmer has had a long history of being an asshole and difficult to work with. So when it was revealed that he had lost much of his ability to talk due to the cancer, it was really hard to know how to feel. I mean, should we be sympathetic towards this guy even though he hasn't exactly "played nice" for much of his life in the spotlight?
Alec Baldwin and the Rust tragedy is another one. On one end, considering Alec's history of being a boorish and violent, hot-headed bully, should we be celebrating that he finally face the consequences of his actions. But then again, it's hard to cheer for his presumed downfall given that an innocent woman with a young child is dead.
