I couldn't come up with top 10 list, the rest aren't worth mentioning.

Edit: ok, number 8 could be Saving Private Ryan. And The Last Crusade number 9.

reply

10? He hasn't made 10 good movies so that's ambitious.

reply

You cant really believe that

reply

I don't think there's 10 movies of his that I can watch today without rolling my eyes at how shallow and schmaltzy they are. I enjoyed them as a child, but the cheap sentiment is too apparent as an adult.

reply

No. He's made 10+ excellent movies!

reply

Well, even though he could have expressed it with more restraint, he has the right to his opinion. I must admit that I'm kinda guilty as well of not being such a big fan of his. I don't deny that objectively he is definitely one of the greats and is a really important filmmaker. It's just that there are many filmmakers that I prefer personally.

That being said, now I'm obligated to do a list, so here we go:

1. Schindler’s List
2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Doom
3. Jurassic Park
4. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc
5. E.T. the Extraterrestrial
6. Catch me if you can
7. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
8. Jaws
9. Munich
10. The Color Purple

reply

Well first of all I think it's beyond insensitive to compare films about the Holocaust with dinosaurs so I am going to split my rankings into two different categories

Out of his fun, summer blockbuster films that I've seen:

1) Raiders Of The Lost Ark
2) Jurassic Park
3) ET: The Extra Terrestrial
4) Jaws
5) Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
6) Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
7) Catch Me If You Can
8) Hook
9) Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
10) The Terminal
11) The Lost World: Jurassic Park
12) Amblin'
13) Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

Of his more serious films:
1) Schindler's List
2) Saving Private Ryan
3) Empire Of The Sun

reply

Movies are movies, apart from their subjects

reply

I stand by my position

reply

Agree

reply

Heaven, such a long list, even f****** Crystal Skull mentioned, but no Minority Report? Really?

reply

Minority Report was a fun film. I enjoyed it. It made a lot of money and critics seemed to like it and it's frequently seen on television.

But it lacked all that Spielbergian feel. Kind of like a lower level version of "War of the Worlds". Void of any fun. A bit depressing and not much imagination.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion. I put "Always" on my list. lol.

I liked that movie, think anyone else is going to put that on a list?

Not likely...

And "1941". Look at that film. Probably had one of the greatest choreographed scenes ever filmed. Probably not on anyone's list either.

reply

"Spielbergian feel" - Nice, I am trying to figure that out... What do Jurassic Park and Schindler's List have in common? Is there the same "feel" in Jaws and Munich?

reply

They have nothing in common. Their straight up flicks. I think Minority Report took itself to seriously in the genre in which it was framed. It didn't have that Spielberg feel.

It doesn't looked like a Spielberg film TO ME.

Munich and Schindler's List are both drama's.

I wasn't badmouthing your choice. It's a fine film Pete.

reply

I did not see you badmouthing :-) Minority Report is just special because it was Spielberg's comment on all those restrictions and measures after 9/11. THAT makes it somehow really "spielbergian" for me...

reply

Fantastic. Excellent reply.

What's your "top ten" look like?

Just curious...

reply

I don't have a top 10, I like most of Spielberg's work. But there are some Spielberg movies that really don't attract me for various reasons: Chrystal Skull, Catch me if you can, The Color Purple, Terminal... None of them worth to be watched a second time IMHO.

reply

1. Jaws (1975)
2. E.T (1982)
3. Jurassic Park (1993)
4. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977)
5. Duel (1971)
6. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
7. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
8. Always (1989)
9. Schindler's List (1993)
10. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

**honorable mentions**

Poltergeist/Goonies. Obviously Spielberg pulled the strings here.

reply

You have horrible taste in movies man.

reply

LOL its good there is you that have great taste then! *sarcasm*

reply

Thank God you added *sarcasm*, who would have understood what you meant otherwise?

reply

Best director of all time. He's kind of like Willie Mays in that his peak has ended and he's still playing the game though he's not nearly as good. His peak lasted 25 years though!

1. Jaws
2. Empire of the Sun
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Jurassic Park
5. Saving Private Ryan
6. Schindler's List
5. Minority Report
6. E.T
7. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
9. The Color Purple
10. Poltergeist (I do believe he directed it and it was incredible when it came out)

Let's not forget he had his massive hands in such classics as Gremlins, Back to the Future, The Goonies...
