Do you think he would be an A-lister if he was still alive?

Maybe he would have been bigger than Joaquin.

reply

That terrible bag of shit Joaquin Phoenix certainly wouldn't be.

reply

Are you referring to him as an actor or person?

reply

Related to the question above, it is difficult to say but yes I do.

reply

I imagine River would have been a different type of actor than Joaquin. He would probably have been closer to stars like Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio in terms of the types of roles he would play.

reply

He would have been a heartthrob, not like his brother.

reply

Leo seems to be more selective that Pitt when it comes to film choices so I agree with the Leo comparison but not the Pitt one. And I would also rate Joaquin closer to Leo than Pitt when it comes to acting anbility and film selection, not counting the Joker sequel, imo, that is his only rotten apple.

Not a dig on Pitt, he’s one of my favorite actors but I rate Joaquin slightly ahead in talent.

reply

His trajectory says absolutely but I also feel that he would be an A lister with selectively good taste, similar to DiCarprio and his brother, not counting the Joker sequel of course.

reply

If he stayed on the drugs, I think his career would have fizzled off 10 years later.

reply

Agreed, but I don’t think that’s a valid argument, the kid OD’d off a speed ball, he was already going 1000mph, on a school zone neighborhood rd, while on a combination of hard drugs, I think he would have eventually woken up or gotten the help he needed, similar to what happened to Robert Downey Jr, had he not died that is.

I guess what I’m saying is, someone like River and in that scenario had two paths, hit bottom in the worst possible way or recover and exceed all expectations, similar to Jr.

reply

He already was an A lister when he died. His legacy at 22 is much better than DiCaprio even with Leonardo’s entire body of work. My Own Private Idaho is masterful. Leonardo’s was What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? And that’s it.

reply

DiCaprio also had Titanic when he was 23.

reply

He was miscast and his performance was not great. Even he thinks that. But he was famous after that. Before that was Quick and the Dead where Sharon Stone said of kissing him was like kissing your arm.

reply

I would say no. I dont see him transition into adult actor. I see him more like Christian Slater. Endless B & C movies before turning to TV.

reply

That idea is a hard sell right there. Christian Slater? That’s crazy.

River Phoenix was very much like James Dean.

reply

When he was young! He was losing his looks at 23...

reply

If he were able to get sober I'd say there's a good chance of it.
