The starpower actors possessed in the 80s and 90s was nothing like it is today. Hollywood was still glamorous and mysterious. Most everybody loved the guy, but there was the usual growing resentment of folks wanting to see their idols fall on general principal. Definitely got worse when he started directing. When he started directing very successful films. His ego got nuts and you first started hearing stories about how kooky and even dangerous he could be behind the scenes. Mel's only real crime was getting successful enough to start working his own projects outside of the system. He wasn't a good pet any longer. But back in the day, there was nothing quite like Mel. He wasn't a pretty boy. He was a manly man. Back when macho was sexy.
