What did people think of him before?

I was too young to remember, but I believe he was named sexiest man alive, won an Academy Award for Braveheart, perhaps the world's best paid actor for a moment... what was his reputation among the people that worked with him and fans?

An untouchable superstar and international sensation. His face plastered across every magazine in the checkout line. Always highlighted on the entertainment shows. The starpower actors possessed in the 80s and 90s was nothing like it is today. Hollywood was still glamorous and mysterious. Most everybody loved the guy, but there was the usual growing resentment of folks wanting to see their idols fall on general principal. Definitely got worse when he started directing. When he started directing very successful films. His ego got nuts and you first started hearing stories about how kooky and even dangerous he could be behind the scenes. Mel's only real crime was getting successful enough to start working his own projects outside of the system. He wasn't a good pet any longer. But back in the day, there was nothing quite like Mel. He wasn't a pretty boy. He was a manly man. Back when macho was sexy.
