Leaving the USA?

Anyone else hear this? I just heard that he has decided to leave. Sold his Connecticut home for 11 million. Times must be getting tough for Mr. Gere. I guess Trump will make them worse!

Hope he is heading for a warmer climate, like Cuba. Don’t bother our Canadian friends.

His wife is Spanish-born. He’s moving to Madrid. She has family there. Why are you mentioning Cuba? Spain is fantastic. Especially Barcelona. The food, the people. Do you think he shouldn’t have sold his CT home? What’s the point of this post.

reply

My point was that so many celebrities say they will leave if Trump got elected. And finally one has, more credit to him.

I am not dissing Spain. I have no idea who Richard Gere is married to. I don’t keep tabs on their personal lives.

I mention Cuba because the Hollywood crowd says they are going to Canada. I think they should pick on country more in line with their socialist ideals, that’s all. Nice that Richard Gere is not one of them.

His house was sold before election results.

I actually think the “Hollywood” community have a lot of homes and apartments across the world. No one has just one dwelling. And most love Europe. Gere bought his CT home in 2022 from Paul Simon and he sold it 2 years later for a loss of $6M. There are a whole lot of Americans visiting Italy, France, Spain, Portugal. These countries are overwhelmed with American tourists. There also a lot of expats moving to Mexico and Costa Rica. The cost of living is less and the quality of life are better but it’s also hiking up prices for the locals.

I know there’s a list of people saying they’re going to leave but they probably already have a place somewhere - so all they have to do is go there for a couple of months. I agree with you - they say they’re going to leave, but you don’t know if they are leaving because of Trump or for tax reasons or if they are making a movie. I just think these are hollow announcements and really, who cares. Gere now has young kids so his family life seems solidified in Madrid. And if you’ve been there, you can see why.

I was friends with a kinda lower level celebrity once who was on "Grey's Anatomy" and even he had a bunch of properties in the US and abroad. Once you get to a certain wealth level, it's kinda insane NOT to own property which makes it easy to "leave the US" because you already have your toe in the water somewhere else without breaking a sweat.

But in this increasingly digitized "work from home" era that we live in, why need to live in a specific place for work in entertainment? High level celebrities (and Gere barely qualifies anymore) get flown to wherever the shoot is and put up in a nice hotel, or if it's on greenscreen, then the shoot often comes to them (like Christopher Lee in his last few movies). Practically nothing gets filmed physically in Hollywood anymore so it doesn't make sense for celebrities to live there (or any specific place) especially when Cali is so ruthlessly expensive. I lived in Hollywood for a couple years and it's actually kinda a dump anyway, though I did see Tom Bergeron and Francis Fisher walking their dogs in my neighborhood on numerous occasions.

Granted, I'm sure Gere is making it all about politics, but the economics I think factor in a lot more heavily.

Sounds like great planning there if he doesn't even have Trump's election to blame.

Actually, it was Paul Simon who sold it at a $5.7M loss in 2022. Gere bought the property for $10.8M and sold it for $10.75M in 2024 and not to flip it. Gere wanted to make it a farm for mushrooms and honey and filed plans. Different articles word things differently and I got it wrong. Very wrong as it turns out. He also sold his NY property in 2022 for $28M. He might have other properties in US. He just made Oh, Canada and is in The Agency - have no idea how one with that much income and property handles their taxes. Does a residence matter? It must. I don’t even know why I responded to this discussion. Anyway he’s in Spain. For whatever reason with a Spanish wife and kids and in-laws. I’d love to be there myself - just because I like it.

A lot of people have moved since Trump was re-elected.
You don't know about it because you are ignorant and you don't really
care about facts since you are a MAGA-nut.

As the kids sang in The Sound of Music, So long, farewell , auf wiedersehen.adieu.

Many are not just moving, I prefer to think they are escaping before all their nefarious Hollywood “fun and games” comes back to bite them in the butt.

And you are just silly.

reply

And you are an Anti-American malicious troll.

reply

And you must be a Kamala fan. Reality escapes your little brains. You call people names and label them because you have nothing coherent to say.

How on earth am I anti American? I AM an American and if my fellow citizens want to throw hissy fits and leave the country, then they can go. And they can take a little crybaby like you with them.

reply

Clearly the country of Madrid is very poor and underdeveloped compared to America.

Actually, if Gere is leaving the U.S. quietly for political reasons but not saying that's the reason he's moving, I have more respect for him than for those who loudly grandstand about leaving (before the election in an attempt to curry votes for their side) but never actually leave - like that old fart DeNiro for instance.

reply

I'd actually like to see him the movies again.
