I haven't seen the movie in like fifteen years, but looked it up. They were from Laos, which borders Vietnam, and makes them Laotians. The Hmong people inhabit Southwest China and the countries of Southeast Asia, which of course includes Laos and Vietnam.
So, yeah, they weren't technically Vietnamese, but I was close.
Bottom line is they were Hmong not Vietnamese. As far as their nationality, I imagine they're American or aspiring Americans. Them being from Laos is irrelevant.

To be fair, Clint Eastwood drew a lot of criticism for his stereotypical and negative depictions of hmong characters in Gran Tarino and Letters From Iwo Jima. Not sure if I'd call him racist, but he definetly seems like a "I don't care if you're black, yella, green, brown, or purple, just do it over there away from me" kinda old guy.

To answer your question. I do watch some movies directed by Clint Eastwood but not him as an actor. Many American movies, including Clint's tend to cast minorities actors in supporting roles, so I have no interest to know. That's why I ask for Clint's movies with minorities actors play as Lead role.
