Which moment in history made Leo DiCaprio a Hollywood legend?
Which one was it?
shareGilbert Grape proved he was the next big actor everyone should look at.
Titanic proved he was a bankable star with a massive fanbase.
Catch Me If You Can proved he was a legitimate actor with serious ability.
Catch Me If You Can proved he was a legitimate actor with serious ability? Are you joking?
shareI mean you asked the question, why are you dissatisfied with the answer?
shareI thought that you were joking. But I think maybe it was Titanic that made Leo an international star and Hollywood legend cuz now that I think about it, Leo wasn't as popular before Titanic.
shareWell he did both Catch Me If You Can and Gangs of New York in the same year. I think either/or could be considered. But I'd accept The Aviator as the first time people saw him as a legitimate talent.
shareWell you were right about Titanic being the movie that made Leo a legend. You can stop speculating now. Thanks for helping me figure it out.🙂
shareI don't know if you become a legend with just one moment. Titanic certainly will have raised his profile but he was still I think thought of as more sort of just a heartthrob then. His films and performances during the 2000s is when people started to really take note of him as a lead actor with universal appeal. Let's just say by the start of the 2000s he probably wasn't considered a legend, and by the end of it, he was.
shareI know that you say that it isn't just one moment that makes an actor become a legend, but I feel like with Leo, it was a moment. Like, I followed his career and I could see that he was talented but not legendary. He made some decent films co-starring other Hollywood lengends. I think that Leo has worked with all the lengends from Hollywood - directors, producers and other actors.
It seemed like there was indeed a moment for him though. Don't you think?
Maybe for some people. Obviously in the 2000's is where his popularity really started growing with commercial and critical hit film, one after the other. That's where you'd point to a specific moment if there was one. If I had to pick one myself, then The Departed. By the time you get to the early 2010s, he's got enough hit films and performances for you to look back on and determine him a modern day acting legend.
shareHe has been great in a lot of films but The Aviator made me a huge fan. I love the guy.
He was a natural for capturing the angst, fear, self loathing and wild ambition of a very mentally ill character.
None.
He's (forever) a perma-scowling 12 year old (with the acting range to match)
His success at anything, is baffling?
Naked emperor (with pre-paid 'Hollywood Hyperbole...and little else)
You're right. The scream he lets out when landing the helicopter in "Wolf of Wall Street" he such a 12 yo boy. Hate that scene.
shareSort of agree.
With his big round ball head, he does sort of permanently look like a kid trying to play at being a grown up. Probably the best example of this was Django Unchained, where he looked like a ridiculous Eric Cartman look-a-like with his bum fluff-esque beard.
But I don't think his success is so baffling. I think he gained a teen girls fan base he'd never lose with Gilbert Grape, which was only cemented with Titanic.
I don't 100% have a full on boycott of his work going on but he does actively put me off things as I cannot shake but seeing him as that little kid pretending. e.g. Haven't seen The Departed, The Revenant, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood as the whiff of Di Crapio seems too strong in those ones...
The Departed?
shareTitanic propelled him to superstardom, particularly with the ladies. A lot of males were still skeptical.
Catch me if you can the haters started to warm up to him.
The Departed I feel is the one where everyone was on board.
When Kate Winslet fell madly in love with DiCaprio so much so that he got the role of Jack when it was Matthew McConaughey who would have made a better Jack.
Gilbert Grape was genius.
