I didn't realize True Lies was directed by him. It's a good film but very different from his other work - just noticed it was a remake as well so perhaps not really a James Cameron product?
My favourite is The Abyss and I like that the popularity rating is higher than box office - it implies I'm not alone?

reply

Yeah, The Abyss is my favourite also. Too bad Cameron seems to lack the will to release it on blu-ray. That's the only movie from him I'm after nowadays.

reply

u r not alone

reply

I haven't seen The Abyss in a long long time. I'm from the generation that remembers and often confuses the three underwater epics released that year. I'll put it in my watch list.

reply

Concerning The Abyss, do you prefer the extended edition that features the underwater aliens threatening the Earth with tsunamis? I loved that more than the theatrical, to be honest.

reply

My copy doesn't have any threats of tsunamis but I've always enjoyed it as it is. Cannot remember seeing any other cut I'm afraid.

reply

I haven't seen The Abyss in any form for years, but the Extended Cut (as I meant to call it) had the following:

SPOILERS

The guy who goes into the depths to defuse the nuclear warhead goes into the underwater alien ship, but what the extended cut shows is the aliens have learned about humanity's destructive ways, showing the guy all manner of warfare images one after the other, and the aliens plan to wipe out humanity with the tsunamis that are taller than buildings, and it's up to the guy to explain his "LOVE YOU WIFE" message to them, the contradiction they see in human behaviour. In the end, they relent, and then come to the surface.

SPOILERS END

This is what I remember from when I saw it, and I thought it made the movie 100x better, as there were higher stakes involved. Like LOTR, I would never go back to the theatrical cut of The Abyss.

reply

My copy ends like that - maybe I do have the extended cut then? I'll have to dig it out and see what it says on the box.

reply

The theatrical, short cut became worthless to me after I saw the extended cut.

reply

Agreed.
