Why was there never any nudity in his films?

My theory is that he's a leering dweeb who probably was afraid of not controlling himself.

reply

nobody wants to see him naked

reply

Lol I don't think you quite got the gist of the question!

reply

Because his films are aimed at thinking people as opposed to 14 year old boys who want masturbation fodder.

reply

I don't think that's correct. Sex is a natural, nay, essential, part of life. Would you erase sensual literature, like Lady Chatterly's Lover, or Ulysses, and go back to the Hayes Code?

reply

Not at all, I’m certainly no prude and eroticism does have a place in some films where the story befits it, but I’ve never thought that Allen’s films require it. In fact it would seem incongruous and unnecessary in the type of stories he tells.

Do you really think Annie Hall would be a better film if we’d seen Diane Keaton with her tits out and legs spread?

reply

Even A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy had no nudity, hardly even any bawdy! He wants to do PG only, for what reason?

reply

Because there are other filmmakers who are more than willing to pick up the slack and give you all the butts and boobies you desire.

It’s not the type of director Allen is, simply. Personally I like his films (or most of them, at least) just the way they are; intelligent, insightful and funny. Also it should be said that his movies do often touch on sexuality but he leaves the actual fornication to your imagination, which is fine by me.

reply

I am a big fan of his films too. Never even noticed that there was no nudity in his films. Woody did not need to show boobs and butts because he used his brain to create great stories and characters.

reply

The only movies that can't be done without nude/sex scenes are sex films. I can't think of one film (outside of sex films) that desperately needed a nude scene to keep the story going. You can easily imply that sex happened between to characters in a movie, you don't need to actually show it. Sex scenes are always just cringe.

reply

Actually, come to think of it, didn’t Husbands and Wives include a sex scene between Judy Davis and Liam Neeson’s characters? From memory it was all very tasteful and under-the-covers, but I guess that’s one example of sex in a Woody Allen movie. I think Davis had some internal monologue about how it compared with her ex-husband, so it’s possibly not the wham-bam shagging you miss in his movies, but it is an example of how he covers sex in his own neurotic thinking man way.

reply

Because he's never casted one of his children.

reply

Woah, are you saying Woody would have shot a nude scene if one of his own kids was doing it?

Actually, he wouldn't be the first director to have done it. Several directors have shot nude scenes of their own daughters.

I remember watching that scene in Excalibur when Katrine Boorman did a sex/nude scene and thinking... uhhh, did John film a sex scene featuring his daughter?? hmmm, how odd. But still a great movie.

But yeah, Woody films have never been all that focused on erotic scenes that require nudity. I think the most sexual film he made was Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex. I can't remember if this film had a nude scene, I think it did. But I do remember there was a giant boob in that movie. LOL!

reply

I'm joking about Woody Allen, but I believe he did do some stuff to his daughter.
