Why do you CARE about famous people?

EVERYONE is different and your interests are fine... I just wonder why it is a deal at all?

All over the web I run across articles about famous person did this or that or thinks this or changes their look or whatever....

My deep question is: why does anyone ever give one rip about what some famous person does?

I don't get it at all. Granted, I am different than many people, but I have zero interest or concern about someone rehab or who they're banging or how old they are, what they ate... seems a tad, well, I have no clue why people WANT this information.

Why?
How is it "Entertaining" to know what some other person DID? Isn't it just null info?

Personally I don't do that and could not care less about their personal lives. I'll watch a movie with Jenniffer Lawrence but I know nothing much about her personal life. Same with every other celebrity. I get tired of seeing the cover of a magazine in a store that talks about some celebrity's personal life. I'd hate to be a celebrity and constantly have my personal life talked about by the public.

reply

Because it's an entertaining way to escape our lives at the expense of someone else who is probably more successful than us and some want the attention anyway.

reply

Well, guilty as charged here. However.......

Being interested in what celebrities are doing in their lives (and what they had to say) was something I was interested in while very young.

Can't speak for others, but for me, as one got older, I couldn't possibly care less what a celeb does, or says.

Only interested in whatever entertainment vehicle they are involved in.

And then, this will sound a bit disconcerting but it's the truth - the only other time I take notice is when one of them passes.

Outside of their day job, I’m not really interested in what they get up to.

reply

Generally I’m the same, although I’ll admit that there are certain celebrities I do admire as people and I’m genuinely concerned about their well-being. For instance when Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer I was googling her name daily to follow updates on her treatment and recovery. Similarly in ONJ’s final years I was invested in the news about her and hoping she would beat it again because her presence made the world better for me.

As for who’s dating who or celebrity scandals, I couldn’t be less interested.

The OP seems to suggest that this is a modern phenomenon though but honestly public interest in the lives of the rich and famous is as old as time.

reply

I’m the same.

It would be lying if a lot of people did not say they do or did care about famous people, especially in the past.
Celebrities impact our lives through their entertaining us, and it's only natural to follow them, or care about them.

However, that's why we need to separate the person from the work.

reply

From my seat, I feel it is unnatural to follow or care. I don't understand the connection for following them for merely acting in shows and movies. Why does that make their off screen life important to us?

It will never happen, because majority is going to do what it do, but I think it is wrong for us to deify them like we do.
They are just people. Who play pretend, and can make tons of money, some are sexually attractive to us but that isn't realistic trait either to want to follow around an unfullfillable dream.

reply

Why do you think you're different?

I'd bet the majority of people don't give a rat's ass about celebrities.

reply

so, reason I asked, is there must be a TON of money - IE viewers - to keep such a large network of info spewing out there online.
SOMEONE is drinking it in....

IE also rags like the National Enquirer (is that still a thing??)
but I get it... voyerism, watching a train wreck, TMZ etc, IS entertaining on some level.

Just odds when you are outside of it, step back and really look at it all. Why does someone else care if Boyonce gets lip injections etc??

You humans (and humanoid BOTS) are puzzling.

reply

Check the return rate of those magazines. I was told by someone in the business years ago that something like 60% were returned and pulped. I don't think as many people are buying them as advertisers would like to think.

reply

I only care about whether they can entertain me.

But I also watch the hot female celebs hoping they’ll post nude photos or perform nude in films.

Today's celebrities are boring. Those articles are likely from their publicists. Interests in celebrities help sell movies, products, etc.. since a famous name commands more money.

Older celebrities were more interesting. They were talented, glamorous, charismatic, good-looking, sexy, entertaining and their lives were interesting and provided escapism and a good belly laugh. My family bought all of the tabloids each week.

Top celebs. For instance:

7x married Elizabeth Taylor was beautiful and broke up America's sweethearts Debbie Reynold's marriage to Eddie Fisher only to dump him for Richard Burton. And the huge engagement ring!!! And weight gain...

Elvis. Females in my family swooned over him. His marriage and kid. And weight gain...

Princess Di. Only pretty one in the dysfunctional royal family while bravely humanizing good causes and charities and sticking it to Charles every chance she could get. She was photogenic. Notice how no one cares about Harry and Megan.

John Kennedy Jr aka John John. America's royal prince. Guy rollar-bladed shirtless on New York's streets. Elaine found him spongeworthy.
