Last night we watched Nighmare on Elm Street (1984) 🔪

I’d forgotten about how good this film was and the huge influence it had on the genre.

My 10 year old daughter and I loved it. (Daughter 9/10. Me 9/10).

We got a Nightmare On Elm Street box set a few years and me and FootOfDavros Jnr have worked our way through them - Just the meta one (New Nightmare?) left to watch...

The first one is still a horror classic I'd say and the Dream Warrior one was a decent continuation of the story. But the second one was surprisingly hilarious! I'll definitely watch that again at some point...

reply

Nothing like introducing the next generation to the classics.

I was obsessed with NoES as a kid, especially the third one with Alice - though I probably wouldn't let a kid watch it for its sexier themes lol - and I was a huge Heather Langenkamp fangirl. I always thought the second one, with Jesse as the main character, was the scariest, probably coz that was the one that actually delved into the true story the whole series was set around.

reply

We will do part 2 tonight 🔪🔪

reply

NoEs part 2 is pure comedy to me.

reply

I’m already managing my daughter’s expectations.

reply

Good luck, I hope I'm not remembering it wrong and she finds it completely pathetic lol.

reply

She did, lol.

reply

hahaha ah well it was a different time. Also, again, it's been years since I first watched it. But fair.

reply

Alice wasn't in the 3rd one. She was only in parts 4 and 5. I admit I don't care for parts 4 or 5.

reply

Oh no, facepalm moment. I meant Kristen, idk why but I always end up calling any Patricia Arquette character some variation of Alice because of her character Allison on Medium.

reply

Part 1 and 3 are the only good ones in the series.

reply

4 is just as good as 3 it just gets less credit because of no Heather Langenkamp (and by proxy no John Saxon).

The Wes/Heather/John connection of 1, 3 & New Nightmare are the reason fans gravitate towards those three (Wes didn't direct 3 but he was one of the writers).

4 was the highest grossing in the franchise until Freddy vs Jason and with good reason.

reply

I think 4 is just okay but the lead girl who was also in part 5 was good.

reply

This seems to be the general consensus.

reply

Don't show Alexi part 3 unless you want to see some naked lady riding on top of a guy in a long scene.

reply

Thanks for the heads up.

reply

Classic!

My favorite is the third one though.

reply

A lot of people say the same.

reply

I haven't watched this in like 30 years

reply

I haven’t seen these films since they were first released.

reply

I'm more of a Friday the 13th & Halloween fan over Nightmare but I think it's so cool your watching horror movies with your kids and sharing your experiences here.👍🏻

reply

No doubt we’ll do Friday the 13th and Halloween as well.

reply

I don't think you would want your daughter watching the Rob Zombie Halloween movies. They are pretty dark and the brutality in the kills are something she should not be watching. The earlier movies of the Halloween and Friday the 13th movies would probably be fine for her to watch.

reply

I think the charms of the Friday the 13th franchise would be lost on a 10 year old girl.

reply

I'm not sure the sex would be appropriate but the kills aren't very scary as it's easy to see how fake they are by today's standards.

reply

I saw it when I was twelve, it scared the hell out of me, my sister and our two cousins 😳

Great horror classic!

reply

It was the only movie that scared me as a kid.

reply

The Exorcist and Alien scared me too. Maybe I was a wimpy kid🤷‍♂️

reply

It’s a great film.

reply

At least now your daughter will see where the Duffer brothers got inspiration for Vecna from in "Stranger Things" :)

reply

I think it goes further than that; final girl Nancy Thompson and Stranger Things Nancy Wheeler.

reply

Oh yes! I was reading up on the movie on Wikipedia (I didn't want to watch it, but was curious, so I read the plotline), and the name "Nancy" stood out to me. It made sense in regards to both the horror references, and the fact that "Nancy" was a popular name for teenage girls to have in the 80s.

reply

It’s not just the name - they look and act similar.

reply

Really? I'm confused, because the story-telling indicates that the Duffer Brothers were making it up as they went along, and had to do a ton of retconning in Season 4 with the Eleven flashbacks, because in the previous 3 seasons, there was no indication they ever planned on having a Freddy Kreuger-esque type of villain as the chief bad guy, or if they did, they hadn't figured it out until they were writing for Season 4.

So it's possible they took inspiration for the Nancy in "Stranger Things" from the one in "Nightmare on Elm Street," but it's not clear if they ever intended on eventually taking more inspiration from that to create Vecna until later.

reply

Give it a watch and you’ll see what I mean.
