Same Year - Almost The Same Movie

I just watched Life Stinks and The Super and both movies basically have the same plot, rich guy living with poor people and I noticed that they both came out in 1991.

Life Stinks came out in July and The Super came out in October.

At one point, the main character in The Super (Joe Pesci) even says "life stinks".

Both movies are available on tubi right now:
https://tubitv.com/movies/312185/life-stinkshttps://tubitv.com/movies/100006354/the-super

So what other movies came out in the same year and are similar in plot?

reply

The Wizard of Oz and The Blue Bird (starring Shirley Temple) came out within 5 months of each other although The Wizard of Oz was 1939 and The Blue Bird was 1940.The Blue Bird was supposed to be Twentieth-Century-Fox's answer to MGM's The Wizard of Oz. They are quite similar, both teaching that there's no place like home/happiness is to be found at home following a fantasy-based adventure. I like them both but if you watch them both it's obvious why The Wizard of Oz performed better.

reply

I never heard of The Blue Bird - I'll have to check it out.

reply

I would be interested to hear what you think if you do watch it.

reply

Just watched it - it's on tubi if anyone else wants to watch it. It was interesting.

I'm surprised I'd never heard of it. It was also the first and so far, only, movie I've seen with Shirley Temple.

I think I can guess why it flopped - the European/German setting just as the war was starting up. You can certainly see The Wizard of Oz representing America and the new world order on the way with this movie representing the old, dying world of Europe.

I like the scene with the grandparents. I wasn't particularly fond of the dog portrayal - that dog would have been loyal from start to finish. The cat portrayal seemed spot on. The ending seemed a bit rushed.

reply

I'm glad you watched it PB. Of course now the next thing I have to say is that you need to watch more Shirley Temple movies. Especially Heidi and The Little Princess.

I hadn't thought about the setting affecting its popularity but that makes sense.

I liked the grandparents scene although I could have done without the yodeling. My favorite scene was in the luxurious home. That place was beautiful. The sets were quite impressive and it's too bad the movie flopped.

Oh well. Not everyone can be as entertaining as we are.

My fivelemons prototype is almost ready to be tested.

Here's a quick preview:

I kept the blue eye from the previous fourlemons model.

I promise I'll be back when I'm feeling better. Hopefully soon.

Get well soon.

The punsters, bigfoots and white sheet wearing fools of this site can only provide so much entertainment.

reply

I couldn't stay away from you for long PB. I'll try to be back in the next day or two.

reply

Rest until you're at full power, we all remember what happened with twolemons years ago.

reply

Thanks PB. Unfortunately what I've got going on could last for awhile but I'm up to a little ridiculousness today if you are. I left some breadcrumbs in the house on the head thread.

Well thatโ€™s the end of that thread then, lol.

Do I win a prize since mine wasn't on his list? ๐Ÿ˜‚

reply

Technically you were not within the same year but since it's my thread and I set the rules, I'll allow it.

Your prize:

reply

Not within the same calendar year, no. But within a year of each other, yes. I can't help it that some egghead at 20th Century Fox got so busy drinking eggnog in December that the production wasn't released until January.

Merci beaucoup for the eggs anyway.

reply

It's just one egg. You don't get all of them.

reply

FINE.

The Shining and Marvin Goes to a Hotel and Goes Crazy. (1980) Both expose the dangers of wintertime isolation while celebrating the effects of patterned carpet.

reply

That sounds like a made up movie to me.

That egg was probably off. I aged it for 37 years, maybe that was too much.

reply

Well it should be a movie.

reply

Avocados shouldn't be so difficult to peel - it's a cruel world.

reply

Actually yes, because The Blue Bird isn't on my even bigger list that has 242 similar movies that came out within a year of each other. The list I posted has 141 movies.

reply

Wow! Well you can add it to your list now. Glad I knew something about movies that possibly most people around here did not. As you may have noticed that is a rare moment for me. ๐Ÿ˜

reply

I got the list from Wikipedia. It's not just a list of films, there is some interesting info about the phenomenon.

reply

Outstanding list.

Studio warfare in action.

Triplets actually for 1989.

Cameron's The Abyss (89) spurred the making of Leviathan(89) and DeepStar Six (89).

You can argue that the tactic was successful, The Abyss was released last, and had disappointing ticket sales for a star director.

Three in one year - has there ever been four?

More underwater action:

Lords of the Deep (1989) /tt0097781
The Evil Below (1989) /tt0097306
The Rift (1990) /tt0099701

reply

WOW....VERY IMPRESSIVE.

reply

Yes, yes, we know your back hair is impressive. Try to stay on topic.

reply

Two movies named Jack Frost came out in 1997 and 1998. Both are about a man killed in an accident who comes back as a snowman.

reply

Capote (2005) and Infamous (2006)

reply

One of my old pet peeves was that Rob Roy & Braveheart came out at about the same time. Braveheart was the one celebrated, when it actually was just box office filler, while Rob Roy was a classic.
