The Land of the Lost
Sigmund the Sea Monster
HR Pufnstuf
Lidsville
The Lost Saucer
Far Out Space Nuts
The Bugaloos
The Land of the Lost was far and away my favorite. I remember it being like a grab bag, never knowing which of their shows would be aired on a given day, and when it was LOTL I felt like I had hit the jackpot!
My husband also liked the Looney Tunes cartoons. For some reason I never got into them. Maybe they appealed more to boys. My favorite cartoons growing up were The Flintstones and The Smurfs.
Electra Woman and Dyna Girl was a Sid and Marty Krofft show. I never watched it, though. I liked the high adventures of Marshall, Will and Holly being chased by obviously fake dinosaurs and large-eyed Sleestaks. 😁
Yeah - that's right, Looney Tunes. Hubby was into it too? Yeah, maybe it's a little boy thing.
OH is that right - EW and DG was Sid and Marty?? Didn't know. Cool!
Check out link below....
Yeah, LOTL - Sister was into it - if I remember correctly, they were on spaceship or something? And they would go way back into time. Yeah, fake dinosaurs and other assorted creatures.
If anybody wants a window into what the 1970s looked like, that link is the perfect example. 😁 I didn't realize Deidre Hall was on that show.
On Land of the Lost, a dad and his two kids were rafting down a river when "the greatest earthquake ever known" sent them plunging down a waterfall into the Land of the Lost, which was a land filled with extinct things from times gone by. And Sleestacks.
We were an "As the World Turns" family. That soap gave rise to actresses like Meg Ryan, Marissa Tomei, and Julianne Moore. I say that as if that makes it some sort of work of art but it was just as ridiculous as all soap operas, I'm sure. 😁 ATWT especially liked to bring dead people back to life. 😂 My mother, sister and I would watch it avidly every night and my dad would sit in the room and pretend he wasn't watching it but I think he was. 😁 After my sister and I moved out, he continued to watch it with my mom.
He probably was, meaning your Dad watching it. They way it happened for me is certain times of the year, there was no sports - so one would come straight home after school. "Guiding Light" started at 3. My Sisters were always glued in. Not knowing what to do with myself when there was no practice after school, I casually joined in. Before I knew it, I was hooked, then my Mother got hooked, then my Father. It was always on at 3 pm in our household, 5 days a week. ATWT was the 2-3 pm show.
Yeah, soaps are ridiculous, but looking back, GL did have some good story lines. There were times all of us were totally locked in to the show.
ANyway, it went off the air in 2009. I don't even know if soap operas exist anymore.
I just saw a headline recently that the Young and the Restless was renewed again and after a Google search it looks like The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital are also still on. I am a little surprised that any soap operas still exist. I wonder how long until they will be completely extinct?
Wow, only 3 left??? Geeze, there was probably around 20 back in the day.
Yeah, I agree - I'm also surprised there are even 3 left. Once someone figured out you could get the same kind of ratings with talk shows - why bother with a soap?
Hey how about game shows? Are they still around??
Match Game was pretty cool - I mean back then - with Gene Ray burn and Richard Dawson.
Anyway, are they (game shows) close to ceasing existence as well???
I think game shows are a little further from extinction than soap operas. The Price is Right is still on during the day and then you have the night time game shows like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Google pulled up quite a few that are still airing. I suspect as long as somebody can continue coming up with some sort of gimmick there will always be game shows.
You said you are a fan of "As the World Turns". The only CBS show I can think of that ran just about that long is "Dallas". "Dallas" - as I understand it, was kind of like a soap opera.
Still thinking....
Yeah, "Dynasty" was on ABC. I can't think of another show that ran that long. It has to be "Dallas" cuz I do recall it ran all thru the 80s. I don't recall it in the 90s - but it is possible it ran until 1991. Yeah, I can't think of anything else....
I'm going to reply here since the boxes have gotten so skinny. You were right in guessing Dallas! I have to admit I cheated a bit on yours because I didn't know it and asked my husband for some input. He knew right away that it was White Shadow, or at least, that's our guess. 😀
Yes, Dallas was a good one. My whole family would gather around the television on Friday nights to watch it and Falcon Crest. It brings back good memories from both the show itself and our family time together.
White Shadow had a bada$$ theme song. Thanks for sharing.
It's rolling around in my head the topic has been done before. Because I remember posting my two faves. Yeah, in someones else's thread. Bit redundant to do it again.
However, for fun, and because I'm heading out here - these are my top two. If you feel like posting your top two, that would be great. Actually 3....
I would say the Sanford and Son theme song is my favorite instrumental theme song. As far as songs with lyrics I would say in this order:
1.Good Times- I don't think it gets any better than this one.
2. The Greatest American Hero- Of which I should note I never watched a single episode but I love the theme song 😁
3. The Jeffersons- Now that's a fun one to belt out!
I can post links if you'd like, but I have the feeling you know all three. 😁
Maybe the Far Out Space Nuts should be our nickname. When I first joined this board I did tell people I had just landed in a spaceship.
If you have any way of watching the other Sid and Marty Krofft shows you should. They claim they were not on drugs when they created them but it's a little hard to believe. (Then again people might think our back and forths are drug fueled as well, but the most recent drug I've taken is Tylenol.)
If they truly were not on drugs as they claimed then they had some super vivid imaginations! I didn't watch all of their shows but of the ones I watched, this is my ranking:
The Land of the Lost
Sigmund the Sea Monster
Far Out Space Nuts
The Lost Saucer
I was around 12 years old, too. At the time I thought LOTL was the most amazing, action-packed show on TV. Now when I occasionally watch an episode on YouTube it looks like something a drunk person put together in their garage.
"Land Of The Lost" (which I saw during its initial run on NBC...yes, I agree that the Sleestak were terrifying!)
"Lidsville" - I remember this for one person...the late, great Charles Nelson Reilly (I actually remember him more for this than I do "Match Game"...he was such a great panelist, though!).
H.R. PufNStuf (I don't really remember much about this at all... but my family did indeed watch it on Saturday mornings)
Along these same lines, there was another NBC Saturday morning cartoon that I loved as a kid called "The Secret Lives Of Waldo Kitty." Man, I loved that cartoon...I would cry my eyes out at the end of every episode! 😃. Here's the theme from it: https://youtu.be/k0qfdvstwYI?si=BlLDoeSAU8UksN1c
As Archie and Edith Bunker famously sang..."Those Were The Days!" 😃
Indeed they were, and I'm glad we can still find these shows on streaming platforms or YouTube to occasionally relive our youth. I never watched The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty. I had actually not heard of it but it had such a sweet opening theme.
Yes, those Sleestacks were terrifying and made the show so exciting as a young kid. They may look a little funny now but back then they were serious business! 😁
Kaptain Kool and the Kongs were a pretend rock band that hosted the “Krofft Supershow” which was the umbrella show for “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl”, “Dr. Shrinker” and “The Lost Saucer”.
Somehow I have seen episodes of The Lost Saucer but don't remember the others that you named. Maybe it was also shown in amongst the shows that I did watch as a different package.
