Gamey Meats

In the US this week most of us will probably be eating some turkey, however the questions in this thread are for everyone no matter where you live. While I like turkey when it is fresh and especially with a little gravy on it, after a day or so it begins to have what I call a "gamey" flavor. Normally the meats that I enjoy are chicken, pork, beef and most fish including shellfish.

1. Have you tried any meats beyond the ones mentioned in the paragraph above? If so, which ones?
2. Do you enjoy meats with a gamey flavor?

(Per Google, if it helps: "Gamey" is a term used to describe the distinct, strong, and somewhat wild flavor of meat from animals that are not domesticated.)

reply

I never found leftover turkey to get gamey?

What I don't like is lamb - way too gamey for my taste.

My brother is an excellent cook, and at one of his big spreads, he prepared (among other things) lamb. I didn't know and thought it was a pork roast. I pulled my brother aside and told him the pork was "bad". He told me it was lamb, so I replied "then it's great!"

Speaking of pork, a friend of mine is a hunter, and he gave me several thick chops of wild board - said it would be the best pork chops I ever had. Didn't like them - gamey.

reply

I had lamb one time in the sixth grade when we were studying Greece and somebody's parent brought it in. I actually remember liking it although it's possible there was an accompanying dipping sauce that helped its flavor. I can't remember. I've never had it since so I don't know what I would think of it now.

I've never had wild boar, though. I think if I was offered any I would politely decline.

It's very much like pork, just a touch gamey. I mean, I ate the whole chop. If you don't like gamey at all, then yes, pass.

Sometimes we watch Naked and Afraid, and the shit people eat when they haven't eaten in a week is frightening. I suspect if we hadn't eaten in a week, a roast wild boar would be superb eating.

reply

Have never found turkey gamey.

1. Deer, elk, moose, bison, bear, goose, duck, rabbit.
2. No.
3. Soup.

reply

Robots don't have taste buds. Fake news.

Signed, million man.

reply

1. You have tried quite a variety of meats. Did you have a favorite amongst those that you listed?
2. We are in agreement on this one.
3. I'm going to take this opportunity to ask you if you've ever had Brunswick Stew which is like soup. It's a thing here in the US and rumor has it that some people slip in meat that is not chicken when they make it homemade. I've only ever had it with chicken and enjoyed it.

reply

1. I like the meat that isn't moving.
2. I changed my mind, greener the better.
3. I have Brunswick bowling shoes but they don't taste very good.

reply

1 and 2. I just recently read that sloths often take on a greenish tinge due to the growth of algae or fungi on their fur and they barely move. I think we've just identified what you should have for dinner!
3. Now why are you sticking shoes in your mouth?

reply

4. Why isn't there a four?

reply

You instructed me that three was the best number of questions several threads ago. I'm going to take the request for the fourth question to mean you like talking to me. 😍

reply

Your brother does pay well to harass you, so there's that.

reply

I ain't got no brother. Admit it, I ain't so bad.

reply

Well someone is paying me in Febreze coupons to harass you.

reply

1. Having travelled extensively internationally, pretty well anything you can think of.
2. No I don’t.

reply

Have you ever tried octopus? I have not but I'm thinking about trying it someday. While considered exotic where I live, I think I might like it. I've had squid and I like it.

reply

Baby octopus is the bomb!

So nice served in a salad with a good vinaigrette. Sorry to muscle in on your question to Andy, but octopus (and squid) are favourite seafoods of mine. Yum.

reply

Don't ever worry about muscling in. 😊 You're welcome to answer anything I ask. I think I will try octopus sometime when I see it on a menu. I think I would enjoy it.

reply

If I may make a few recommendations. If you ever happen to be in an authentic Italian restaurant that offers insalata di polpo (octopus salad), give it a shot. But my favorite preparation comes from mariscos (Mexican seafood) places in the form of cΓ³ctel de pulpo (octopus cocktail), which is served in a tomato/pico de gallo/lime-based cold "soup." In any decent preparation, the octopus will have a delightful solid yet springy texture, similar to cheese curds, and a unique, but not overly, "seafoody" flavor.

Oddly, as a sushi fan, I find that preparation (tako) a tad rubbery in texture, but still tasty. Big fan, if you can't tell. Squid is just as great. Favorite Cuban dish is arroz con calamares en su tinta (squid and rice cooked in its ink), usually flavored with green bell peppers.

reply

That all sounds very tasty! Y'all are making me want to try some octopus ASAP!

reply

Yes, octopus is yummy πŸ™

reply

Yes it is!

I love a well cooked Kangaroo steak.

reply

I did not realize that people ate kangaroo. What would you compare it to, for example chicken or beef? Or does it have a flavor all its own?

reply

It’s closer to beef in texture but it tastes like neither. It’s a very unique taste, quite gamey which is why it came to mind immediately when I saw your thread. It has to be cooked medium rare, overcooking it makes it tough and unpleasant.

I used to visit a restaurant in Sydney that served local meats and they did the most beautiful roo steak, with a sweet jus made from native berries. With a glass of red it was one of the most delicious meals you could have.

reply

I have learned something new today! 😊

Just out of curiosity, how common is it to come upon a kangaroo where you live? Someone once told me that seeing kangaroos in your part of the world was about as common as seeing deer where I live, and that's a fairly common thing. Like if you were just driving down the road or taking a walk on a nature trail for example, how likely would it be for you to see a kangaroo?

reply

Only in zoos in New Zealand! Back home in Australia I would see them from time to time where I grew up because that was rural. They are not just hopping down the street in towns or cities though, despite what some people think!

reply

Okay so just rural areas. Still, to me, being able to see them anywhere seems so cool.

What about koalas? Is it easy to find and see them?

Thank you for humoring me with all of my questions. πŸ’œ

reply

I ate a kangaroo burger in Australia πŸ¦˜πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
I would describe the taste as very beefy beef.

reply

1. Yes. Bear, Asp, Alligator, goat, sheep, lsmb, emu, elk, reindeer, etc...
2. I don't mind gamey flavor.

reply

You have tried quite a few different meats! Of the ones you listed, which was your favorite?

reply

Lamb of course, but I do enjoy Aligator quite a bit.

reply

1. Venison, Bison, Lamb, Goose, Duck, Rabbit, Pheasant, Ostrich, Frog's legs, Alligator, Snapping Turtle, Squid, Octopus, Escargots, Periwinkles*

1(a) One thing I'm NOT a fan of is any kind of organ/glandular meat- liver, kidney, sweetbreads, tomalley**, etc.- YUCK!

2. You can probably tell from my list that the answer is YES! πŸ˜‹

reply

You have tried quite a few different kinds of meats, too! Of the ones you listed, do you have a favorite? I agree with you that I am not a fan of organ meat either. I've only tried liver as a child but did not like it.

In addition to squid, from your list I've also had ostrich, although I did not actually realize I was eating it while I was eating it. We had a community breakfast at church one day and I thought I was eating sausage cheese balls but they turned out to be ostrich cheese balls. They were good though! 😁

reply

Honestly, most of those were one-offs, but of the ones I eat with any regularity (basically the first three plus calamari) I'll go with venison as my favorite...

reply

My nickname is "Gamey". 🀣

reply

I think I'm afraid to ask why. πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‚

reply

I'm usually known as "Gameboy". That was my IMDb name.
