What Was The First DVD You Got?

I can't remember what was the first VHS or blu-ray movie I got but for some reason, I can remember the first DVD I got - it was The Final Patient from 2005 and I still watch it every now and then.

And you, what was the first DVD you got and do you still have it?

reply

"Almost Famous" (2000). 3-disc set. Disc 1: theatrical, disc 2: director's cut, disc 3: original songs composed for the film. I don't have it anymore. I let someone borrow it and the asshole never gave it back.

X-Men, Fight Club and Moulin Rouge. Not by choice, all three came free with the first DVD player I bought. Not a bad haul though, they’re all decent movies.

And I do still have all three. I regret getting rid of my old VHS collection so I’ve held on to my discs. I still very occasional add to the collection too, if I find a bargain or it’s part of a series that the completist in me needs to have.

That's pretty sweet - never heard of a DVD player coming with movies before.

Was it new or used?

reply

New, a special deal through Harvey Norman which is an electronics/home appliances chain in Australia.

reply

Wild.

I have never ever seen a VCR/DVD/BluRay/TV bundled with a movie.

Score one for Australia.

reply

Yeah well back then DVD players were MUCH more expensive, paid over a grand for my first one so the extras softened the blow a bit.

reply

Okay, I take that back. Ouch.

I don't think our first VCR even cost that much.

reply

Too long ago for me to remember with any certainty, but I think it was Cowboy Bebop: The Movie.

I still got it, though.

reply

The Crow (1994) and I still have it in my collection

"Quigley Down Under," in 2002 when we got our very first DVD player. Both the DVD and the player were gifts from a friend of my dad's, and the DVD was meant to be used for testing, but we also love the movie, so there's that.

FIRST PAYCHECK FROM MY FIRST JOB...I BOUGHT A DISPLAY MODEL SONY DVD PLAYER AND DOGMA ON DVD.

The Matrix. IIRC it was the first and only DVD I purchased before even owning a DVD player. The movie is also the only one I can recall seeing three times during its initial theatrical run. Have seen it many times over the years since, but saw all the sequels only once, iirc, and kind of wish I hadn't, though I'm not one to lament that any sequel has the capability to "ruin" a great original.

Strangely enough it was the Matthew Broderick version of Godzilla. Not horrible but not very good either. Plus the redesign on Godzilla didn't really work.
