I don't like supernatural movies because they're just lazy.

Everyone is allowed to enjoy whatever they like, but, TO ME, the one thing that super natural movies always seem to me is lazy. some weird stuff happens, people get confused (because we all think in terms of our reality in known physics), then, BOOM "super natural" things are what is happening. a girl can spin her head around, bats fly out of someone's navel, someone waves their hand and flattens a sky scrapper.... literally ANYTHING is completely possible because "SUPER NATUAL". Done. That's the answer.

Nothing is worked at or earned. No need to even bother explaining, just super natural.

I know most of these films are for shock and jump scare value, or gore, but the conflict feels lazy to me.

Super heros are also the same way. Never felt earned to me. Need a power? Oh, guess what, this guys MAGICALLY suddenly has needed power. Especially that gawd awful Captain Marvle is indestructable and no ned of oxygen to fly around in space. No earned, not worked at, just BAM Super Natural powers. Delivered on silver platter. OH LOOK! She punched a planet to death with one hit! OOOH NEAT!! Says, "I'm far too easily impressed by CGI"

Yawn.

Most are formulaic. Ditto romance and action movies. I look for the exception. Great supernatural movie was The Others. Also Ghost and The Exorcist.

Watch The Witch or Hereditary. Those movies weren't lazy.

meh, I avoid "scary" stuff altogether. bad for my soul and dreams. reliance on ANY super natural powers is lazy.

meh - your take is lazy. Its art to make what is virtually always a trite contrived formula/genre arresting. I'm guessing, based upon your response, you haven't even seen the films in question, or entertain any inclination to. Therefore, such distinctions are lost upon you - but that actually undercuts your original point.

I actually share your disdain for most supernatural movies, and agree that it amounts to some form of conventionality or sloth. But we should always be looking out for genius, in any genre.

Believe it or not, it's not the genre that's bad; it's the writing that determines its quality. Fantasy films with good scripts do very well, particularly if there's at least some kind of explanation as to where the magic comes from, and what kind of rules of magic are included in that world.

What you're talking about are cheap, crappy, low-fantasy tv movies that have second-rate stories with lazy plot devices put in.

Yeah, Captain Marvel is a sore spot for many comic book movie fans, particularly the bitch who plays her. Sadly, she's the poster child for everything that's gone wrong in Phase 4 of the MCU. Phases 1-3 were better because they were better written and didn't rely heavily on the stupid "girl boss" trope.

Just keep in mind that the superhero genre is kept separate from sci-fi and fantasy, just like the disaster film genre is often kept separate from the science fiction genre.
