Superheroes and their underpants

Why did some superheroes like Superman and Batman wear their underpants on the outside of their pants?

Was it because they were so focused on fighting crime that they forgot how to properly dress themselves?

reply

According to Julius Schwartz (famed editor of DC Comics from 1944-1986 who edited the most famous of all external-underwear superheroes, Superman), this was simply modeled after the garb of aerial circus performers and wrestlers of the era in which the first superheroes proudly donned their underpants over their tights.

reply

You're teaching me both science and history today. I should start calling you Professor Kowalski!

But now I have to ask this question. Why did circus performers and wrestlers wear their underpants on the outside of their pants?

reply

Their underpants as you call them, have pockets in the back that they keep their cool super hero stuff like Tums and Kleenex.

reply

1. Do you call them something other than underpants?
2. Couldn't they have just had those pockets in their regular pants?
3. As a computer, where do you wear your underpants?

reply

1. They're called super shorts.
2. No.
3. I go commando but this is where the ladies leave their undergarments when we're done:

I didn't know if Canadians had a special term for "that which covers the privates".

reply

You were supposed to comment on the money and ask who paid who.

reply

Well Leroy, you were supposed to answer my question about underpants so I could ask you if Canadians called them something else like bloomers, drawers or the cutesy underpantehs!

reply

Maybe I didn't want the whole internet (or at least the three people who might read this) to know about our exchange! Those were clearly American dollars so, uh, you wouldn't have been the one paying.

reply

Depends on where you are in the country. I know in the prairies, there are the slang terms gitch, gotch, ginch, and gonch for I think briefs. I think it comes from a Ukrainian word.

As for ladies underwear, I can't think of slang for them here.

reply

Thanks Salt. Your fellow countryman was being evasive.

reply

I checked with some folk from my work and got different answers. One guy said ginch was women's and gonch was men's, but that's not what I've known. So yeah....

reply

I'm going to practice talking to you like a normal person.

Why thank you for making me aware of their underpant pockets. It seems like they would need Tums due to their stressful jobs and Kleenex for the occasional inflamed nasal passage. I appreciate your input and hope you have a nice day.

Ya ho.

reply

I couldn't tell from the clip if Iron Man had on underpants or not but regardless they'd have been donned in the correct order even if they were there. Maybe it's just DC superheroes who are confused?

reply

I found this. It might answer some questions you have.

I will require the Cliff Notes version, please.

reply

LOL! Good one!

reply

No info about why he wears his panties OVER his pantyhose.

reply

Hahaha! "panties"
(I wouldn't want to tell Batman that he is wearing panties! Superman wouldn't care. He is above those Earthly insults)

To accentuate, and draw attention to, the Bat Bulge?

reply

Yeah I actually think that's why it might have been. They wanted to assure us all that they were virile enough to fight penguins.

It's how some weight lifters / circus strongmen dressed way back when, like this guy:

And they're not underwear, they're wrestling trunks, like these guys are wearing:

Superman and Batman were created in the 1930s and their costumes were most likely inspired by circus strongmen and pro wrestlers of the day.

reply

Thank you. I have now gotten my daily dose of man bulges.

reply

Cool photos! I bet they dressed like that to show-off their toned physique. I wonder if women swooned.

Superman needs the extra fabric. Now you must understand the following reasoning is based on Kryptonian Biology on Earth in the presence of the Sun:

When a Kryptonian flatulates, the earth fibers are unable to withstand the force of the gasses passing through them. Superman's Kryptonian fibers were limited and there was only enough for the cape and the crotch.

Batman on the other hand added extra padding in the front and back due to the Joker's cheap shots and shark attack pranks.

Thank goodness somebody finally knew the answer.
