Songs that are ANTHEMS 🎢

Anthem: "a usually rousing popular song that typifies or is identified with a particular subculture, movement, or point of view"

What is a popular song of any genre that you would consider an anthem- either in general or personal to you?

Here is an easy, obvious one but there are so many more:

Getting going here to exercise - this one just hit my brain.....

One could consider this an anthem. It was sung by literally 100s of thousands of people at Anti-Vietnam protest demonstrations in the late 60s, early 70s. Personally, one doesn't think it did any good (antiwar demonstrations)- however, this song was relevant for that effort......

We'll go with the live version, which begins at 00:24....

That's another good one! I couldn't help but think while watching the video that we probably would have a more peaceful Earth if we all had access to the drugs he did. 😏

In all seriousness, it is a good message and a great example of an anthem.

It made me think of another peace-loving artist and one of his anthem-like songs:

As well as this group and another song promoting loving one another.

I think it's the best message there is!

Yeah maybe - I think everyone in the video was on LSD (or possibly something else) LOL

Funny you would mention Cat - personally not a fan, however, one of my best friends, literally had our diapers changed together, loves Cat. Maybe I should get him to join in! LOL

Yep, second one, excellent track by an excellent group. These guys, exactly right, talking about joining in.

They even had the sensibility to understand what causes the majority of the problems between people...

So many good songs came out of the 60s and 70s. People sang about things that really mattered.

Indeed. Hey 4L let me ask you something - ok first, I'm about to get back into it (exercising). So take your time. Here we are in the 2020s - for your money, what decade do you think produced the best music? To limit it somewhat (I mean theoretically you could go back to Beethoven) - we'll go from the 1950s to the 2020s. Taking the entirety of each decade - which one do you think the best music came out of???

Ok, I'll catch you in about a half hour........

reply

I only need one second to answer that. 😁

🎢🎢The 1970s, baby!🎢🎢

Which decade would you say?

reply

Me too.

😊

Probably: -
1970s
1980s
1990s
1960s
2000s
1950s

2010s

reply

I'm not too far from that. I'd say:

1970s
1980s
1960s
1990s
1950s

2000 🀒except Amy Winehouse
2010🀒except BTS

OK, I was thinking about it while doing my thing.

I think I'd go with the 70s as well. You had so much great stuff that came out of the decade.

Great classic rock - Led Zep, The WHo, The Rolling Stones

Great pop music - Wings, Elton John

The emergence of punk - BLondie, The Sex Pistols

OUtstanding soul music - which we've touched on. Even some great one hit wonders - Guys like Dobie Gray, AL Wilson.

SOme other great stuff we talked about - Stevie WOnder, Marvin Gaye, THe O'Jays

ALthough not crazy about Southern Rock, there is a 70s band I'm a huge fan of - Atlanta Rhythm Section. Great, great band.

Even early 70s stuff like The Carpenters - like that too. Some of the disco still works for me.

One could go on and on. So yeah, if you've got that much stuff you like out of one decade - well that clinches it - its the 1970s.

ANd I thank you for participating 4L. Glad we agree. Ok, nice chatting with you as always - we'll catch you next time......

Indeed it did! Lots of great anthems because there was a lot going on in the world that people wanted to address. That song was a great addition to this thread. For some reason the next place my mind went after listening to your song was this:

I love it! Such a great song...I love the guitar playing on it! I think this was the only hit song that The Youngbloods had, but what a great song it was. Thanks for posting that...I haven't heard it in awhile!

I LOVE all the different directions you went in with this. There are so many anthems out there and you covered some ground that needed to be covered. From Rock You Like a Hurricane which I've always loved, to Volare you made me smile. 😊

I'll add this anthem from another hair metal band.

LOL! I had that one on the list too, but I had too much hair metal so I switched it for Anarachy in the UK πŸ˜†

I've had Volare on loop since posting this lol
