If you could attend any past concert...which one?

The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden, 1969

I'm not even the biggest Rolling Stones fan in the world but the recording of that concert is just awesome.

Top ticket price was $8.00.

I'd go with Bob Marley sometime on the '73 tour when Peter & Bunny were still playing with him...

reply

My family has been pretty good about going to concerts that appeal to us, knowing that many of our favorite artists may not be touring much longer. I wish I could have seen Prince in concert, though, and Guns and Roses. Maybe there's still a chance with the latter.

reply

Yeah definitely -

Prince's (with The Revolution) concert in 1985 was probably the greatest concert I've ever seen.

reply

SO JEALOUS. It just goes to show that we should go to concerts when we have the opportunity because these artists are not going to be around forever.

reply

Well yeah, that and being young. My group of friends and I - that was our thing - going to concerts.

So, everyone from that time period, I believe I saw them all.

Prince stuck out because of what he did that night, plus, at that time, due to Purple Rain, he and the band were in top form - red hot. If I remember correctly it was three encores - the place was jammed packed - going crazy. Then it looked like he was done - it was around 1 in the morning. So, people start leaving. We're on our way out, and Lisa COleman suddenly walks over to her keyboards. Then the other keyboardist, Dr Matt - he walks out. We had no idea what was going on, half the place had emptied out. Then the drummer Bobby Z came out and started drumming - it was insane. About a minute later, Prince, Wendy and Brown Mark came out - at which time the entire band started playing again. If I remember correctly they did three more songs. Never seen anything like that before, or since. The only unhappy people that night were probably all the parents, LOL. We didn't get home till about 330 AM!

reply

Sounds amazing, and also like they truly loved playing music. They weren't done and I'm sure you were glad they weren't!

reply

Yeah, it was either that or they sincerely appreciated the crowd.

Maybe while in the dressing room someone from the band could have said "Hey - lets give them a couple more".

Whatever the reason was, it was a singular experience for me, LOL

Best show Ive ever seen.

reply

Incidentally , I've gotten probably the correct impression you're as into music as I am.

I already know we're pretty close in age (GENX)

Weren't you out there every Friday night seeing whatever band was playing???

reply

Nah. I was chasin' boys. I didn't start going to concerts until I was an adult and I had a lot of catching up to do.

reply

Gotcha.

Well, hope you had a chance to see some good bands as you became older.

reply

Whooo wheee, perfect timing - just chiming down (finished workout) before I head out.

Yep, Billy JOel. He was one of the last concerts I saw - took my Mother

Aerosmith - good show

Yeah Rod Stewart. Good show.

Rush - Outstanding!

ELO - first ever

Some great stuff there 4L - sure would have liked to see The Who. It must have been something. Stevie Wonder, too.

So - top 3????

Think I saw Joan Jett - I've got in my head she may have warmed up for Bon Jovi. Or maybe Ratt. Eehh, can't quite remember.

So, yeah, anyway, have you got a top 3???

reply

The best was the Queen concert. They are my favorite band and we were on the 10th row. Here is a picture I took.

Second best was the first Stevie Wonder concert. He played the entire Songs in the Key of Life album.

Third is a 3-way tie: Culture Club-Bellamy Brothers-Travis Tritt

reply

Outstanding!

Nice shot of Brian May.

CUlture CLub, ahahahaha - that must have been wild - no offense but that was a band we incessantly made fun of.

Ok, hey thanks for the answer. Have a nice evening 4L

Catch ya next time.....

I’ve been fortunate to see Prince 3 times and I saw GnR a couple of years ago.

I know this isn't what you are talking about but I would have loved to have been at the world premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony which took place on May 7, 1824, at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna.

reply

Imperial box?

reply

Nah, I don't need box seats if the acoustics are good.

reply

I wish I had thought to say that.

It would be cool to see The Beatles in their Cavern Club days in Liverpool.

That's a great one!

Black Sabbath at the Olympia Theater in Paris, France on December 20, 1970 so I can see Bill Ward do this live:

I'm like sslssg and would love to see the "classic composers" also...Mozart, Beethoven (I always think of "Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure" when it comes to Beethoven! 😃), Bach, et.al. Erik Satie would have been an interesting person to watch perform at the French cafe he often performed at...hearing "Gymnopedie #1" on a beautiful Summer's day in Paris would have been something else.

Being a guitar player, I have two. I'd have loved to have seen Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock (He didn't take the stage until late Monday morning and most people had already left when he played...the people who stayed to watch him play got a real treat). Second, I'd have loved to have seen the great Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia perform (Trivia about him...he used to get so nervous before his performances that he'd get sick before taking the stage). Two very different guitarists and two very different experiences...but I think they both would have been great.

Your post reminds me this...not perfect, all the more charming for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uglJXwsgOk8

Wow, I loved that! It's amazing to see these videos of these young kids playing guitar like this...their guitars are bigger than they are, but they can really play!

And I love flamenco players also. That is one tough style of playing to master... I think it just gets in their blood after awhile. I've seen some videos of Paco DeLucia playing and he's just phenomenal.

Any Gun N' Roses shows in their 80s early 90s heyday.
