This was weird.

Companies are using copyright law to dictate who can repair things and ice cream machines was one of them - they, along with some other restaurant equipment got an exception:

The ice cream machines at McDonalds are notorious for breaking down and the franchise owners are forced to deal with only one company to fix them.
