I like Nirvana, but always thought that Alice in Chains are a tad bit better.

Theirs was the soundtrack of my freshman year in college. Even though I was never into grunge my freshman roommate was so I heard them plenty. While I wasn't a grunge fan I recognize their talent and the impact they had on so many people.

reply

I like Lithium and Smells Like Teen Spirit but a lot of their other songs are too whiny sounding for me. I definitely liked Alice in Chains and Soundgarden much more.

reply

Same as the beetles. WAY overplayed and annoying now.

They were the radio ready grunge band. Next in line was f'ing pearl jam. I wouldn't care if I never heard either band again.

Great band and I still miss Kurt Cobain to this day. He's a great example of someone who wasn't a great "technical guitarist," per se, but he had a gift for coming up with these catchy little hooks and riffs, plus he knew how to write a song (He got the most out of what talent he had). I think he had at least one more great song in him when he died.

reply

Very inconsistent band.

Some of the best live performances (MTV unplugged being a great example) as well as some of the worst drunk, punkesque shows I've seen.

Many good recorded songs, many downright awful songs (I dare you to make it through With the Lights Off in one sitting).

I think if Kurt hadn't died, the band would have fizzled out and been relatively unknown to younger generations as opposed to their perception as being legends now.

Nirvana was a breath of fresh air

They were pretty good. I didn't and don't dislike them. I think In Bloom is a great song.

But they were no Jesus Lizard or Mudhoney or Dinosaur Jr. Heck, they weren't even a Babes in Toyland.

reply

I agree.
Particularly with that Jesus Lizard shout-out.
Goat hits in a way that Nirvana never could with me.

Mostly great.

He had a real talent for great pop melodies that sounded perfect even when he was shredding his throat.

It's not the kind of music that excites me personally.

But it is kind of a drag that we didn't get to see the kind of career he would have had. I think he had the talent to be as frustrating, annoying & occasionally great in the way someone like Neil Young has been.
