One of Elton's greatest...

Just listen to this and look at those extraordinary lyrics. This is why music is referred to as, "the language of the soul." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlPlfCy1urI

So true. Great song but of course he didn't write the lyrics. The music he writes for those words is generally fantastic. I still love his music but can't watch his live shows now. Old songs like Your Song his voice can't reach the higher ranges, but it still works well for his newer material. Like Robert Plant said of Led Zeppelin reunions, they come across like cover groups.

reply

Well, I really don't care who wrote the lyrics. They were beautifully paired with his voice.

reply

Bernie Taupin deserves a lot of credit when it comes to the lyrics.

I'm not really a fan of his voice, but there are a few Elton songs from the 80s I do enjoy, like I'm Still Standing, Nikita, Sacrifice.

reply

Ok. I don't care for all of his stuff either, but this one I really like. I just think he delivers it perfectly. It's like, 'I Will Always Love You', written and originally performed by Dolly Parton, but immortalized by Whitney Houston.

That name looks familiar and I get this, so I have revised an opinion once again. I used to work with roadies, setting up concerts for major musical groups. Yeah, what goes on backstage. We were like the unsung heroes of the events. I nevertheless always enjoyed those concerts immensely, not just for the great music but also for the personal knowledge that I had played a part in putting them together.

Completely agree

Here's another one like that.

Yes! And another similar one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIF7ayYksk8

I love Elton John, have all his albums and have seen him live many times.

reply

Well, I made the observation long ago, when you first shared a picture of yourself here, that I thought you resembled a young Elton John. So what say you to this song?

reply

It’s a classic.

I've seen him in concert twice, once by himself and once with Billy Joel. He has a voice that is so clear that it commands your attention. It's hard to pick a favorite but this one might be close.

Oh yeah, had completely forgotten about that one, haven't heard it for so long. I've mentioned this here before and recently also that I once had the good fortune of having a job where I set up top artists in concert. Here's one of them. He's now become very obscure but back then was very popular. He's blind and quite the showman. In the middle of a song he would actually climb on top of his piano. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izi_YQGuENc

Oh I'm very familiar with Ronnie Milsap, and love his music. I didn't develop an appreciation for him until I was an adult but now whenever a song of his comes on the radio it's understood it can't be turned. 😁

Speaking of great collaborations like Elton and Billy Joel, here's Ronnie Milsap again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I7v2zx6ttM

reply

One of his many great ones. He's another one with an effortless strong voice whose songs have a variety of different sounds instead of all sounding alike. I know he didn't write all of them himself but he still brought them to life.

reply

Oh, he had a great, dynamic voice, live. You mention variety. To me, his concert seemed to come somewhat out of left field because he sounded so country compared to Chicago, Joan Jett and the others I was involved with. I mean, smack dab in the middle of all these rock, heavy hitters, here comes Ronnie Milsap with his country voice. But it worked, and beautifully so. This was an arena full of young college people and they were on their feet, clapping and loving this guy.
