It’s got a nice late 90s, early 2000s groove to it. I’d listen to it πŸ‘

I like them and have a couple of their albums. "Shine" is one of my favorite 90s songs.

Dolly Parton released a bluegrass version of Shine in the early 2000s, which I enjoyed possibly even more than the original. I agree though, it’s a great track.

reply

They were ok.

Had a bit of moment there in the mid 90s, quickly faded away.

"Shine" first became a hit in Summer of 1993 and "Blender" was released in the Fall of 2000 (their final recording with their most well-known lineup...FYI, I'm not as fond of that as I am their previous recordings). That's over a 7-year run, which was a pretty darn good run back in the day. I think the description of them having "a bit of a moment" and "quickly fading away" isn't accurate. They were one of the biggest rock bands of the 1990s and they got tons of radio airplay back then (at least here in Columbus, OH, where I'm at).

Speaking of "Run," that's probably my favorite song from them. That was released off their recording "Dosage" back in 1999...such a mellow groove to that song. I still miss the music of the 1990s...so many great songs and artists from that period of time.

reply

Hahaha

Well you're probably right - I wasn't a fan of the band. From my memory, a couple of tracks in the mid 90s were really good. After that, they quickly faded away for me. If in fact they did have a good 7 year run as you say - then I stand corrected.

"One of the biggest bands of the 90s" ???? Yeah, I don't know about that.

Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and ALice in Chains may have issue with that comment.

KURT DIED IN 94...LAYNE DIED IN 96...A LOT OF 90S LEFT...PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE THAN THREE BANDS UNDER THE BANNER OF BIGGEST BANDS OF THE 90S...COLLECTIVE SOUL HAD CHART TOPPING SINGLES SEVEN YEARS IN A ROW AS WELL.

reply

What are you talking about?

"Shine" reached 11 - it was their highest charting single

"The World I Know" reached 19

"December" reached 20

From 1996 on, they never got higher than 65 with a single.

THAT FACTOID IS MY BAD I GUESS....READ IT ON A WEBSITE WHILE RESEARCHING COLLECTIVE SOUL....I WILL SAY AS A ROCK FAN IN THE 90S...COLLECTIVE SOUL HAD A LOT OF RADIO PLAY AND LOOM LARGE IN MY MEMORIES OF THE DECADE.

reply

Hey that's fine. No disregard whatsoever for your personal taste.

For me I'll take the three bands I mentioned 1000 times over Collective Soul.

But, as one said, if they meant something to you - terrific.

Since we're on the topic, I'm going to try to think of a CS song I like...

All right, this is a good track - plus it's held up......

GREAT SONG...ONE OF MY FAVORITES BY THE BAND AS WELL.

reply

Great points... it's hard for me to believe that Kurt Cobain has been dead for over 30 years now (and Layne Staley for almost 30). I feel like both still had at least one great song in them when they passed. πŸ˜₯

jacotodd47, I get that you're not a fan of Collective Soul's music and that's fine. I just wanted to point out that they were a lot more than a "flash in the pan," so to speak.

By the way, I love all three bands that you mentioned. They were indeed great bands also. What I love about the 90s music is that there were so many talented artists/bands to choose from in that era, but they were all unique. They had their own sound and they wrote/performed so many great songs. It was a great time to be alive.

reply

Yeah, hahaah, you're spot on.

And thank you for respecting the fact I'm not a fan of CS.

Yeah for me, 70s and 90s music has aged well.

1980s music sounds ridiculous to me now.

A lot of good stuff came out of the 1990s that holds up today.

reply

Well, I love it all! πŸ˜ƒ That's just how I am, though...I really love and have a passion for music, plus hearing certain songs from the 70s/80s/90s/00s/10s makes me nostalgic.

What's funny about the 80s to me is that I was not a fan of a lot of the "pop music" back then. For example, I couldn't stand Madonna and would always turn the station whenever one of her songs would come on the radio (although, if someone would hold a gun to my head, I'd have to admit that I do think "Crazy For You" was a good song). πŸ˜ƒ Same with Whitney Houston...I despised a lot of her music, plus Mariah Carey's music also. But we had so many choices on the radio back then...I could tune into the classic rock station and hear old classic cuts like "Suite: Madame Blue" by Styx, "Hypnotized" by Fleetwood Mac, "Dear Mr. Fantasy" by Traffic, et.al., and it was brand-new music to me back then. Then they would play a song like "A Girl Like You" by The Smithereens (as an example, when it first came out...I love that song to this day! πŸ˜ƒ) or "Runnin' Down A Dream" by Tom Petty and you were still hearing new music. I just have a lot of fond memories of listening to the radio back in those days.

Music and movies are a lot alike in many ways. There's a "personal aspect" involved in both that, while an artist/song/movie may not mean that much to you, they might mean a lot to someone else (I got that from ecarle/roger1 who posts here...I just love reading his posts and the "personal aspects" he mentions with respect to certain movies). That's why I'll never criticize you or others for your music/movie choices...like what you like/don't like what you don't like... it's all good with me! πŸ˜ƒ I would guess that we'd end up agreeing more than disagreeing on our music choices, though! πŸ˜ƒ

Yeah I hear you, but just for the sake of discussion....

I liked 1980s music, too - in the 1980s. Madonna sounded great then. The Hair metal bands were my faves. Even liked the new wave stuff.

It all sounds absurd to me now. I have to really search, nowadays, to find 80s music that sounds good to me today.

Fleetwood and Styx did their best work in the 1970s - plenty of their stuff still sounds great today.

The 70s as a whole, not just those classic bands, even some of the Disco holds up. Sure some of it sounds ridiculous now, but you can find tracks here and there that have held up. Oh yeah, and some outstanding soul music as well came out of the decade.

Just like the 90s - the classic 90s bands we've mentioned, they've held up. I'd add 90s hip hop to it as well. SOme of that stuff still sounds great.

With film, you can find great films in every decade. For me, well I guess once again, the 70s were the best overall.

You just made me think of the band Soul Asylum which had the song Runaway Train about missing children.

reply

Interesting band at the time. They were definitely part of the grunge scene in the early to mid-90's.

I remember them on the lockers at the my local HS.

I never understood why this band just faded into obscurity.

Ed Roland has such a distinct voice.

I always considered them U2-lite.

They could have morphed into a Christian rock artist and had some success for a decade or two.

But they never went there.

It's kind of sad to see them performing at county fairs in Iowa and Native American casino's in very rural America.

Now they're just popular via YT clicks either from nostalgia or Gen Z kids who think it would be cool to play hacky sack with their dads or moms.

I think there last televised performance was on the Tonight Show sometime in the late 2000's.

A fun bad with a ton of good underrated stuff who never got much press.

reply

Very 90's sounding. I don't care much for it

reply

Forgettable.

Why did you remove so many bands from the "bands done already" section?
