Social Acceptable-ness

I have noticed that there are some things that are considered socially acceptable in one setting and completely inappropriate in another.

1. On the beach people walk around nearly naked. Butt cheeks hanging out. Boobs 2/3 to 3/4 exposed. Far more nakedness than clothed-ness and it's totally fine. Walk around in the exact same outfits in a Target (or any store) and there will be gasps and whispers. 😱

2. Twister game. Normally a group of people would not twist and contort their bodies all over each other because it would be weird and even inappropriate. Get out the Twister game and the fact that you have your head in someone's crotch with your arm traversing someone else's nether region and it's great fun!

I would like your thoughts on all of this. Also if you have other examples you can feel free to share them.

Why is it when I eat beef no one says anything, but when I do it when the cow is still alive PETA sends the cops on me?

reply

Because if you eat raw beef you could get E. coli and all variety of worms. PETA is worried about your gastric biome.

Good point.

Another example would be punctuality. Show up late to a party and you're the cool one. Show up late to a work meeting and you're the slacker.

Oh yeah. I remember reading about how it's perfectly fine for an African woman from certain tribes to be running around topless, but if the female CEO of a company in a Western country tried that during a staff meeting, people would be wanting to have her carted off to the looney bin to have her head checked.

Or it's perfectly okay during a concert to be screaming, jumping, singing, and dancing, but if you try that randomly in the middle of a park with no music, people are gonna look at you like you're nuts.

Let's not forget walking your doggy on a leash, but try that with a small child at a theme park, and people are gonna get very uncomfortable with you about that.

Yes I thought about the concert scenario, too. There's a lot that's pretty acceptable there including what is usually wafting through the air πŸ˜‚ that would not go over well in other settings.

I tend to look at things from unusual angles (maybe?) and don't know how many times at the beach I've thought to myself that nowhere else (at least in the US) could people get away with walking around dressed like that. With that said, it is nice to have a place like the beach where you can be more uninhibited and carefree.

I remember being a teenager and talking to the family a few times about nude beaches (usually in jest, I've never actually been to one). A common joke my parents made about that was, it always seems like the last people you want to see naked are at those places. Everyone just assumes you're gonna see models and attractive people there (I blame tv for that), when in fact, you most of the time see the exact opposite, or so I'm told. Ironically, you can wear swimsuits or clothes to those places, it's just, nobody will arrest you for indecent exposure if you choose to go Au Natural, hehehe.
