How do YOU feel about The X Files?

One of the most iconic shows ever put on tv.

So I finally got to cross the revival off my watch list. Just posted my review on its page.

I wasn't allowed to watch the show when it originally aired, at first. Cause lil ol' me was a scaredy cat.

Even the freaking opening theme music creeped me the fuck out.

But when I moved in with my grandma, I could watch anything I wanted, as long as she went to bed early. Or was out doing old people stuff, idk. πŸ˜†

Man, the show's first like 5-6 seasons were absolutely fantastic. It's some of the best tv I've ever consumed.

But Duchovny's exit & the show dragging the mythology on & on, killed the show. Finished all of it but man, it was a chore. Not shit but definitely a husk of its former self.

its on my list of classic tv shows to watch, but havent got around to it yet. I keep getting stuck watching other stuff. I have heard nothing but good reviews about it over the years.

I remember this guy at work was obsessed with the smoking man.

reply

I'm the same with The Wire. I've heard nothing but great things about it but I still haven't watched it..

It's been on my lisg gor ages now.

I became a huge fan after I watched it air for the first time. It was almost dead last in the ratings so I videotaped the show each week assuming it would be cancelled. I celebrated each week as people discovered the show and the ratings began to slowly climb.

Show jumped the shark when they released their motion picture. I stopped watching after I saw it. The show felt like it was going in circles by recycling the same issues. Duchovny leaving was a bad idea, too.

I'm positive I still have those dusty recorded videotapes.

The writers just did not know how to handle the main/mythology plot & it just affected the show..

I mean the whole thing with Mulder's sister was so frustrating, disappointing & anticlimactic as hell.

reply

The sister storyline had a lot to do with my eventually giving up on the show.

reply

Understandable. The whole alien stuff was just a frustrating mess.

Honestly, I only stuck around for the case of the week stuff. That was always my favorite part of the show.

reply

i watched most of it when it was on-air and still think it's fantastic!
season 7 is the poetic ending to the franchise but there were a few gems in 8 &9.

the reboot was atrocious at best...

reply

The cases were still entertaining for the most part..

The case of the week stuff has always been the best part of the show imo.

Also, as someone who literally just finished the reboot, I genuinely enjoyed season 11.

Season 10 was pretty shit though. Except for the Were-Monster episode. That was a great episode.

Your final paragraph is my opinion too. I liked that show best when it was a β€˜mystery of the week’ type show.

Fringe and Dexter fizzled for me towards the end as well.

reply

The X File's case of the week stuff is the MAIN reason I got into shows like Fringe, Supernatural, Haven, Eureka, etc.

It started my love of media that investigates the wierd & the unexplained.

reply

I watched up to two seasons. That's all

reply

Did you like fall off or was it just not for you?

reply

I was more interested in girls by season 2.

I loved it when it was first on and watched it and the movie religiously. The movie should have been the finale of the show in my opinion. I believe I tried to continue watching after that and lost interest. Like so many successful shows they dragged it on way too long, but the earlier seasons were fantastic tv.

reply

Most shows get stale after 3 to 5 seasons..

Especially shows that keep dragging the main story for way too long.

The resolution to a dragged out story is almost always anticlimactic & just not worth it in the end.

Absolutely agree with that. I can think of many shows that I got bored with after 5 seasons.

reply

The very first time I heard about it it reminded me of Kolchak: The Night Stalker which was apparently a favorite of the creator of X Files.

reply

The first 3 seasons are 90’s sci-fi perfection. The rest isn’t bad either but haven’t got through all of them.
